The McGill University Health Center Department of Ophthalmology in collaboration with the Chinese Lions' Club of Greater Montreal provides a free eye clinic to the general public, once a year, predominantly targeting the vulnerable populations and people with no
access to vision care. The event started more than 10 years ago when Chinese Lions Club of Greater Montreal reached out to Dr. John Chen, Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon an associate professor of MUHC Ophthalmology, who kindly agreed to run a free weekend eye clinic with the help from the Lions. Over the years, the clinic has served mainly people who are 65 years of age and older, with a family history of macular degeneration or glaucoma, with chronic medical conditions like diabetes and others who had limited access to ophthalmologist. The Chinese Lions Club with helps from other Lions Clubs around Montreal area has continued to assist the event by providing volunteers and funding towards the logistical costs of the clinic, including posters,
telephone lines and lunch. Over the years, the event has grown tremendously and has become a largely resident-driven outreach activity. A large number of medical students were also involved in the volunteer works including answering questions, distributing informational pamphlets and promoting increased awareness about the importance of eye health. Selected patient will be given an appointment for our screening clinic. Free screening eye clinic will take place on November 25th, 2017
By appointment only. We prioritize patients who are:
-seniors
-would like a cataract evaluation
-diabetic
-have a family history for glaucoma or macular degeneration
-don't already have an ophthalmologist
The Clinic is supervised by McGill University Health Center Department of Ophthalmology Physicians
