Campus facilities access is limited for March 11.

Due to the winter storm tomorrow March 11, all in-person activities are cancelled. Public service spaces within PERFORM (ie. Gym, Athletic Therapy Clinic) are closed.

Research spaces remain accessible for essential activities. However, staff will be working remotely. The PERFORM building will remain accessible to those with the proper access/card that are able to do data acquisition on their own.

If possible, research activity being conducted on-site should be rescheduled.

=============================

We’re pleased to share this impactful Montreal Gazette op-ed written by Concordia master’s student Christina Dembegiotis, co-supervised by Professors Alisa Piekny and Sylvia Santosa. The article highlights an often-overlooked aspect of Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the critical link between obesity and breast cancer risk, and the importance of addressing obesity as a complex, treatable chronic disease rather than a matter of personal choice.

This thoughtful piece shows how emerging researchers are bringing evidence-informed perspectives into important public health conversations and helping to drive meaningful change. Congratulations to Christina and her supervisors on this valuable contribution.

Obesity is often seen as a matter of personal choice rather than what it truly is: a complicated metabolic disease.

Meet Gabrielle Schick, a master's student in the Department of Biology conducting research in Dr. Alisa Piekny’s lab. The lab studies how cells divide using tools like CRISPR and molecular cloning.

Her research focuses on understanding how specific proteins are regulated during cell division, a process that is essential for growth, development, and tissue maintenance.

By studying these fundamental cellular mechanisms, her work helps uncover how cells ensure division happens accurately and at the right time.
