The latest issue of the Journal of Health Service Psychology just
landed in my mailbox. The issue contains clinically focused
articles on gun violence, OCD, alcohol use disorder, compulsive video gaming, alcohol use disorders, and clinical hypnosis.

To me, the unifying theme throughout this issue was the ever-present need for us to adopt a stance of humility throughout the process of assessment and treatment. Our interventions, while of some possible benefit, cannot erase the horrors of mass shootings. Similarly, a position of understanding and empathy, not authoritativeness, is necessary to assist patients in dealing with behaviors associated with OCD. Behavioral intervention may be of assistance in helping a teenager with online gaming problems, but such interventions cannot address the social anxiety that may underlie gaming disorders. Similarly, we must accept that not all alcohol use is disordered and any effective treatment must be based on an understanding of the individual genesis of alcohol-related problems.

I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I did!
