We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Caitlin Blaney to the Integrated Wellness team. Dr. Blaney is currently taking new clients. Please reach out to her at mailto:Caitlin.blaney@integratedottawa.ca or CLICK THE LINK IN THE BIO.

Dr. Blaney works with a wide range of adults, providing both assessment and treatment. She has worked with anxiety, depression, personality dysfunction, addictions, trauma, and illness. Central themes that have emerged often in her work include perceived absence of meaning/purpose, low self-esteem, loneliness, and difficulty managing change. She has particular interest in adults living with chronic physical health conditions (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular disease) and young adults in the early stages of identity development. She uses an integrative approach to therapy, including evidence-based concepts from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and existential therapy.

Dr. Blaney works to ensure that her clients feel seen and wholly accepted, as the dynamic between therapist and client is fundamental to therapeutic success. She prioritizes collaborative synthesis between client goals and evidence-based principles of well-being (e.g., recalibrating the nervous system) to create a tailored treatment plan. Ultimately, she seeks to support desired change while promoting insight, self-acceptance, and personal autonomy.

The health and safety of our clients and access to quality care are our top priorities at Integrated Wellness.

Effective Monday March 16, we will be moving to telepsychotherapy sessions to align with today’s statement from the Medical Officer of Health for the City of Ottawa asking that all non-essential travel outside of the home be cancelled. We hope that this will reduce health risks to our clients, their families, and our team, while allowing our clients access to services.

We are taking all possible measures to limit disruptions in the services we provide to our clients.

Warmly,

The Integrated Wellness Team

Heather Romanow is a therapist working under the supervision of Dr. Meagan Gallagher. She provides services to both individuals and couples. We are thrilled to welcome her to our team! We asked. She answered!

1. How would you describe yourself in one word?

Empathic

2. If you could give one piece of advice to any single person, what would it be?

You are a human person with human person limits, just like everyone else – your mental, emotional, and physical energy are precious resources, and setting boundaries with yourself and others around how they are used, protected, and replenished is not selfish, it’s self-care.

3. What book has made an impact on you? (could be therapy literature or not)

The Gifts of Imperfection, by Brené Brown. For me, reading this book was a catalyst in an ongoing process of un-learning and re-membering that has ultimately helped me to shift how I seek to be in relationship with myself and others.

4. What is your area of practice/What types of clients show up in your office?

The clients I see are often struggling to navigate difficult internal and external experiences in their lives and may be feeling overwhelmed or stuck in challenging or unwanted patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving, or interacting with themselves and others.

5. How do you define wellness?

For me, wellness is the healthy connection, balance, and stability we experience in relationship with self. It is an active and intentional process that both enables us to responsively engage in a meaningful life and helps us identify and engage the tools and support we need to weather life’s storms and grow and heal in their wake.

Charlotte Mackenzie is a registered psychotherapist (qualifying) who sees both adolescence and adults in her practice. She is supervised by Dr. Meagan Gallagher, clinical psychologist. We are thrilled to have her on our team!

We asked. She answered.
1. How would you describe yourself in one word?

Compassionate.

2. If you could give one piece of advice to any single person, what would it be?
Feelings are feedback, we’ve got to allow them to unfold to know what we need.
3. What book has made an impact on you?
Attachment in Psychotherapy by Dr. Wallin. This book consolidated my understanding on how early developmental experiences with attachment figures can shape our views of self, others and the world.
4. What is your area of practice and what types of clients show up in your office?
I work with a number of people at various life stages, from teenagers to retired adults.

5. How do you define wellness?
Wellness is one’s ability to navigate through inevitable life challenges while simultaneously working towards a valuable and meaningful life.

We all get stuck in certain situations where the prospect of change can feel out of reach.

It is in these times that we are challenged to look inside, and consider how we can adapt in a way that realigns us with our values and needs, introduces acceptance into our perspective, and increases our willingness to be in something that we cannot control.

This shift in meaning can have a powerful impact on how we see and experience an unchangeable situation.

1. How would you describe yourself in one word?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curious. In my professional and personal life I love putting the pieces together to learn new things and to learn about people and their experience. I was definitely one of those “but why?” kind of kids and this has followed me into adulthood and my work life. .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. If you could give one piece of advice to any single person, what would it be? .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Slow down, take a breath, and listen to yourself. We are often impacted by so strongly by external pressures, expectations (our own and those of others), and in such a rush to be productive or to find solutions that we run on autopilot. We forget to check in with ourselves and we miss so much valuable information that our physical and emotional systems can give us about what’s working for us and what’s not.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. What book has made an impact on you? .
I read “Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters: The Quest for Perfection is Harming Young Women” by Courtney E. Martin while I was working on my undergraduate thesis. The author discussed the impact of culture, media, and the pursuit of perfectionistic standards on young women’s sense of self, mental health, and definitions of success and beauty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
More recently, I read the “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life” by Mark Manson. I found this book so helpful in letting go of perfectionistic standards and “shoulds” that were stressing me out. This book is not encouraging us to be apathetic…using principles that are in line with mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy the author is actually encouraging us to be aware and purposeful in the ways we choose to spend our resources (emotional energy, time, etc).

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. What is your area of practice and what types of clients show up in your office? .

Dr. Melissa Calhoun is a clinical, health, and rehabilitation psychologist who sees adults in her practice. We are thrilled to welcome her to our team!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So we asked. And she answered. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. How would you describe yourself in one word?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Collaborative.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. If you could give one piece of advice to any single person, what would it be? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Slow down and breathe; even a moment can make a difference.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. What book has made an impact on you? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The Drama of the Gifted Child: The Search for the True Self” by Alice Miller. It is a compassionate view on the “gifts” we can learn from a difficult childhood. It has a framework of ‘resilience in the face of adversity’, and helps put words to the sometimes unspoken hurts we encounter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. What is your area of practice and what types of clients show up in your office? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Clients who come to see me are often ‘stuck’ and struggling to make a change; many are dealing with difficult symptoms that get in the way of them living the life they wish to lead. I also see people who are coping with a chronic health concern or who have faced a recent event that has impacted their health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. How do you define wellness? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I define wellness as a process of striving to be your ‘whole self’ that includes learning about who you are using self-compassion, accepting your strengths and weaknesses, and growing in ways that connects you to what matters to you. Wellness is making active, healthy choices to live in a way that lines up with your values. .
