We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Richard Backus, CASEM Member and recipient of CASEM’s Medal of Service.

Richard’s contributions to both CASEM and the broader field of sport and exercise medicine in Canada are immeasurable. His passion and dedication as a team physician for Canada’s national rowing program and at the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games left a lasting impact. His legacy of compassion, mentorship, and excellence will continue to inspire generations of physicians, colleagues, and athletes.

Our thoughts are with his wife Kathleen, his children and the entire Backus family. Dr. Richard Backus will be deeply missed.

📢 One Week Left to Submit Research Grant Proposals
The CASEM Research Committee is accepting applications for the 2025 Research Grants!💡 Deadline: August 31, 2025. Submit: www.casem-acmse.org/education/research-grants.

To be eligible:
✔️ Applications must be submitted by a CASEM member in good standing
✔️ The principal investigator must be an integral part of the project’s development and administration.

Available Grants this year:
🔹CASEM Research Grant: open topic, must be relevant to Sport Medicine.
🔹CASEM New Investigator Grant: supporting “new” researchers starting their Sport Medicine research journey.
🔹Multicentre Research Grant: supporting projects involving at least 5 clinics
