Skin health is more than cosmetic, it's care, it's confidence, and for many, it's access.

On , the Canadian Dermatology Association is highlighting the often-overlooked role of our skin in overall health and well-being.

Chronic skin, hair, and nail conditions, like eczema, psoriasis, or acne, can affect more than appearance, they can be painful, influencing quality of life, mental health, and can be indicative of other conditions.

That’s why self-care should include:
● Access to timely, evidence-based dermatological care
● Early detection and management of chronic skin conditions
● Trusted resources that empower Canadians to properly care for their skin

Self-care is not one-size-fits-all and it should include the tools and knowledge to feel good in your own skin.

Visit dermatology.ca for expert-reviewed resources on skin conditions, sun safety, and preventive care and how you can ensure everyone can access the care they need.

CDA member and former head of UBC’s Department of Dermatology and Skin Science, Dr. Harvey Lui, joined Michelle Eliot on BC Today to share expert tips on staying safe in the sun and why it matters, especially for those using retinol or managing certain skin conditions.

“We know that being in the sun is actually good for you, being outdoors is healthy, being outdoors makes you feel good...” says Dr. Lui. "We’re not as dermatologists telling people to go live in caves, right? We’re just saying if you’re going be out there, do it carefully.”

Certified dermatologists Dr. Ivan Litvinov and Dr. Mark Kirchhof weigh in on troubling new data showing that many Canadians rarely or never use sunscreen, despite a 17% rise in melanoma cases between 2023 and 2024, estimated by Melanoma Canada.

“Melanoma’s, you don't get them in your 60’s, you get them by burning your skin as adolescents and young adults”, Dr. Litvinov explains. That’s why sun safety matters from a young age onward.

A new study shows the majority of Canadians never or rarely use sunscreen, even as melanoma rates climb. Experts warn early sun damage can be deadly and say making sunscreen free or more affordable might help.
