Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions

Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions The official page of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU). Patients and nurses need effective advocates.

We make sure that the Prime Minister, the Minister of Health, other MPs and top-levels bureaucrats know what nurses think. We also serve as an information resource - keeping nurses abreast of the issues, creative strategies, tactics, and the lessons learned is an important part of our job.

Tomorrow, September 30, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an important reminder to reflect on and honour the children, families and communities impacted by the painful legacy of residential schools and colonization.

We all have a role to play in reconciliation. The CFNU encourages everyone to listen and learn from the truth being shared about the residential school experience and the impacts of colonization, and to reflect on how you can uphold reconciliation.

On September 30, APTN and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation are hosting a National Commemorative Gathering that you can take part in. The event will be broadcast live from Parliament Hill, starting at 3 p.m. ET on the APTN channel and on several major television and radio networks. Saturday’s episode of Just Asking with Saroja Coelho, a CBC radio show, focused on how everyday people can engage in reconciliation. Rose LeMay, who authored Ally is a Verb and helped facilitate CFNU’s apology to First Nations, Inuit and Métis People, is featured in this important discussion. The CFNU has issued a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney raising the alarm on the ongoing bombardment and humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

The CFNU stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine and the health care workers trying to serve the population in extremely dangerous situations.

The United Nations reports that public health conditions in Gaza are catastrophic, hospitals are operating far beyond capacity, and some life-saving medicines are totally out of stock, all while deaths from malnutrition and disease are on the rise. Fewer than half of Gaza’s hospitals and under 38 per cent of primary health care centres are even partially functioning.

We call on the Canadian government to do everything in its power to uphold international law. Read the full letter, including actions the government can take to resolve the crisis here: https://nursesunions.ca/letter-nurses-demands-to-canadas-government-re-catastrophic-health-care-conditions-in-gaza/

Ways you can engage:
• Join the Doctors Without Borders campaign pressuring the Canadian government to protect civilians and health care in war zones.
• Support the International Council of Nurses Humanitarian Fund to support nurses on the frontlines of emergency situations.

In this moving video, MNU Labour Relations Officer Marla Johal shares some of her experiences as an Indigenous nurse working in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She spent 25 years working as a nurse, witnessing and challenging racism in the health care system. As Marla says, her experience as the daughter of a residential school survivor and descendant of strong West Indian women fuels her advocacy.

Marla’s story reminds us that dismantling racism in health care and building a more equitable future is a responsibility we all share.

We deeply thank Marla for sharing her story with us all, and her guidance in CFNU’s work towards meaningful reconciliation.

Nursing in Canada is changing—and so must the health care workplaces around it. Listening to the real experiences of nurses is key to solving the staffing crisis and building a profession where nurses can envision a long and fulfilling career.

This one-hour webinar explores the findings of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) latest report, Today's Nurse, which examines the factors contributing to nurse attrition in Canada and offers evidence-based recommendations to improve retention. Using the report as a foundation, we'll dive into a national conversation about the realities of nursing today, and what nurses need to stay in the profession.

CFNU President Linda Silas will lead a discussion with report author, Dr. Kim McMillan, Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa School of Nursing, who will present the report recommendations, informed by the insights and experiences of nurses from across the country. Joining Dr. McMillan is Tiffany McEwan, former president of the Canadian Nursing Students' Association (CNSA), who will share her perspective as an early-career nurse.

Date: Friday, September 19
Time: 12:00 p.m.
