The Canada Health Act Services Policy comes into effect today, rightly ensuring that medically necessary services are to be covered under provincial and territorial health insurance plans, whether provided by a physician or another regulated health professional such as a nurse practitioner.

“Nurse practitioners are a growing workforce with the potential to ease the primary health care crisis. Supporting this growth through structural changes that ensure nurse practitioners can work to their full scope within our public health care system is critical to filling the gaps in primary health care,” explained Linda Silas, CFNU president. “Including nurse practitioners in the Canada Health Act is a key step towards ensuring that everyone in Canada has access to the care they need when they need it.”

Too often, anti-trans politics are framed as a defence of women and girls. This framing hurts both trans rights and women’s rights. The real sources of harm are the systems and structures that enable violence and uphold discrimination and inequality. As CFNU President Linda Silas reminds us, our solidarity makes us all stronger.

In the face of worsening trade and economic threats from our neighbours to the south, strengthening public health care is the nation-building project Canada needs.

“It is long past time for governments to view health care through the lens of economic contribution,” says CFNU President Linda Silas. “When we talk about nation building, our public health care system is the foundation that we need to build upon for a strong economy that is more protected from international trade disruptions.”

A new CFNU report outlines the economic benefits of Canada’s public health care system, including growth, jobs, investment, innovation and equality.

Authored by economist Jim Stanford, The Economic Benefits of Canada’s Public Health Care System demonstrates the importance of strengthening public health care to protect and build our economy.

“Health care is one of Canada’s largest and most dynamic industries, and it’s one of the few sectors of our economy that is largely protected from trade disruptions. Public health care is the nation-building project our country needs,” said CFNU President Linda Silas.
