Umbilical cord TRUE KNOTS šŖ¢ā£
ā£
A true knot forms when the baby moves in a way that loops the umbilical cord and tightens it into a knot. It happens in approximately 1% of pregnancies.ā£
ā£
Most true knots do not cause harm because the cord is protected by Whartonās jelly. Whartonās Jelly is a slimy gel-like substance that surrounds the blood vessels in the umbilical cord. Itās made mostly of water, collagen, and special cells that help cushion and protect.ā£
ā£
ā ļø In rare cases, if the knot becomes tight enough to restrict blood flow, it can lead to complications. However, most true knots are found after birth and do not affect the baby.ā£
ā£
Risk factors for true knots can include:ā£
ā Long umbilical cordsā£
ā High amniotic fluidā£
ā Twinsā£
ā Small babiesā£
ā Excessive fetal movementā£
