There's something so rewarding about facilitating groups & workshops.

It's cost-effective, builds a sense of community, fosters a sense of belonging, and helps reduce stigma. It helps to know you're not alone.

I've had a few requests for group therapy recently that got me thinking: why not make a place where people can request groups and workshops so here it is.

I will be facilitating a drop in crafting circle at the All Saints' Anglican Church in Westboro, for four Sundays in a row beginning October 19th, at 11am until 12pm.

This is a fundraiser for the tree of giving, and all crafts created during the four Sundays will be donated to the tree of giving, which will continue to grow until the Church makes their final donation during the holiday season.

All are welcome, there is no cost or age restriction, and no skill required. Myself (Registered Art Therapist/RP) and Sarah Marcos (student art therapist) will be co-facilitating and will be available for guidance/instruction should anyone want to try knitting or crocheting but have no previous experience.

You are also welcome to bring crafts from home to work on, as this circle is also simply a practice in meditative community, using art as therapy/art as prayer.

Week 4 of our group & tonight's theme brought with it a resurgence of memories, experiences and symbols from my past. (Pictured here the screeching stone on Tara & the wishing tree).

Here's the invitation should you like to participate :)

1. Take 5 minutes to simply free write words in response to the words mystical, spirit, and divine. This will help you hone in on your connection to and story of the divine.

2. Take another 12 minutes to write a flash story using the words you wrote down. You are free to also include the original three words (mystical, spirit and divine).

3. Re-read the story back to yourself in your mind and pay attention to any images, colours, sounds that show up in your mind. Put the story down and close your eyes, sit with the reflections of your story and re-invite that curiosity of “mystical and divine” and your relationship to spirit. Notice what comes up.

4. Draw what your relationship to spirit looks like. If you were to put this into imaginal form what would that look like?

Narrative reflection:

What is my relationship to spirit and the divine? How do I invite spirit into my life? How does spirit show up in nature, and how can the trees strengthen my connection to spirit?

Last night, we had our 3rd session for the Parts of Trees/Parts of Me virtual art therapy group.

Week 3's theme was Bark/skin & protection.

For those who are unable to join us but who may still be interested in exploring these parts of self, you can follow along with the prompt below:

1. What does my “bark” communicate to the outside world: how do I translate to the world what I want them to know about/see about me?

2. How do I keep myself safe from the outside world? What are the parts of me that act as protection?

Want to delve even deeper? Explore the narrative side of things:

1. Write a short story from the perspective of your bark: you can imagine how the bark developed, what you may have encountered in your life up until this point to create the protective layer, how you maintain the protective layer, and if and how you “drop” the protective layer and around whom? What needs to happen for you to feel “safe enough” to pull away the bark and expose yourself to an other in vulnerability?

🌸 At the end of the course-work, practitioners should be able to

1.) identify the 5 phases of the framework

2.) Identify the theoretical frameworks which inform the approach being presented

3.) understand what death anxiety and existential dread are and the potential impacts in therapeutic work

4.) identify their own personal experience with death anxiety, grief, and/or existential dread through what the instructor is calling "you-search" (guided self-exploration) and

5.) How to apply the framework in a therapeutic setting and why creating a framework for exploration of death anxiety is important to future therapeutic work

🌅 This a self-paced course offered virtually through TalentLMS and the instructor will be available for questions, forum engagement and assignment grading. All assignments are graded on pass/fail based solely on your engagement with them as an activity for deepening your learning.
