Expanding the Scope of Practice for Dental Hygienists in Ontario

A Dental Hygienist is a registered oral health care professional whose primary focus is preventing and treating oral diseases. We help you maintain healthy teeth and gums and protect your overall health. 💪🦷

Right now, the Government of Ontario is reviewing proposed changes that would finally allow dental hygienists to:
✨ Order dental X-rays
✨ Administer local anesthetic
✨ Serve as Radiation Protection Officers

These changes would make oral health care more accessible, efficient, and equitable especially for:
👵 Seniors and residents in long-term care
🏡 Rural and northern communities
🧑‍🦽 Individuals with disabilities
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Low-income and underserved families

🗣 How can you help?
You can share your feedback directly with the Government of Ontario by visiting the consultation page:

A Voice for the Profession!

CDHA's press conference, hosted today on Parliament Hill, touched on a range of important issues—from the evolving role of dental hygienists in national programs like the CDCP to workforce sustainability, upholding safe practice standards, and the importance of evidence-based policy. The event has already generated 33 press clippings, from the Toronto Star to the Winnipeg Free Press and Oral Health Group. Read the media release and speaking notes and view the press conference recording at www.cdha.ca/press

During our day of meetings with Parliamentarians from various parties and regions across Canada, including MPs Jake Sawatzky, Anna Roberts, Jonathon Rowe, Ted Falk and Dr. Jacques Ramsay, we spoke about the dental hygiene profession in Canada, access to oral health care in rural and remote regions, the importance of preventive dental hygiene care for seniors, the financial impact of caps on international students on dental hygiene programs across Canada, workplace issues for dental hygienists, national licensure, and more.

Above all, CDHA stated our commitment to advancing the oral health of Canadians.

Every ounce of kindness matters.

Every ounce of kindness matters.

💜 Today, I was reminded of the incredible strength it takes to ask for help.

At Gift from the Heart, we welcomed individuals who walked through our doors with courage in their hearts and pain in their smiles.

Asking for help isn’t weakness—it’s one of the bravest things a person can do.
Today, we witnessed tears, hugs, and joy as pain was relieved, dignity was restored, and hope was rekindled.

To every person who trusts us with their care:
We see you. We honour you. And we promise—there is no judgment, no agenda, only help.

Because no one should suffer alone. And no one should have to die from a toothache.
