What is going on with S***a Umino's injury?

S***a Umino is set to miss Forbidden Door this weekend after suffering "a fractured hip bone and a strained disc."

Intervertebral discs, as the name suggests, are present between vertebrae. They allow for slight movement between adjacent vertebrae, as well as provide shock absorption for the spine.

While there are a few possible injuries to discs, a strain is not one of them. It is more likely that he is suffering from a disc bulge or a disc herniation.

Umino believes he will be ready in time for the G1 Climax Tournament, which begins on July 20. Unfortunately, there are no concrete timelines for such injuries, so it is unclear if he will be fully recovered in time for the G1.

What does it mean to fully recover from an injury?

For some, it may mean to simply be pain-free again. For others, including athletes, it will mean returning to previous levels of activity/sport prior to the injury.

Rehab should always be tailored to your individual capabilities and goals. That is why I create comprehensive return-to-play protocols for all types of injuries and sport to ensure a full recovery.

What is the medial retinaculum?

Kristaps Porzingis has suffered an injury to the medial retinaculum at his left ankle.

The medial retinaculum, also called the flexor retinaculum, is a band of thick tissue that keeps the tendons of several muscles in place. As a result of this injury, Porzingis has suffered a dislocation of one of these tendons -- the tibialis posterior.

The tibialis posterior plays an important role in ankle and overall leg stability, as it is responsible for maintaining the arch of the foot.

Although a dislocation of the tibialis posterior tendon is a rare injury, I don't believe it is severe enough to rule out Porzingis for the remainder of the NBA Finals.

Carlos Alcaraz is suffering from a pronator teres injury.

The pronator teres is cylindrical in shape and found on the palm side of the forearm from the inner elbow to the outer portion of the middle of the forearm. When the muscle contracts, the forearm is turned prone (face down) and the palm faces backward.

For the right-handed Alcaraz, this will likely mean pain and weakness with forehand shots, as well as pain with assuming a backhand position.

What is the radial collateral ligament?

The forearm is composed of two bones -- the radius and the ulna.

The radial collateral ligament of the wrist runs from the radius to the scaphoid (carpal/hand bone). Similarly, the ulnar collateral ligament of the wrist runs from the ulna to a carpal/hand bone.

When the palm is facing forward, the radius sits lateral (outer) to the ulna. However, when the palm is facing backward, the radius sits lateral to the ulna at the level of the elbow, but is medial (inner) to the ulna at the level of the wrist.

Which type of basketball shoes are the safest?

Approximately 1 in 4 injuries to basketball athletes are ankle sprains, so it is natural to wonder whether their shoes are a risk factor.

Some people believe that high-tops are safer because the taller margins of the shoe offer better support to the ankle joint. On the other hand, low-tops are believed to offer great freedom of movement during play.

However, research shows that there is no difference in injury rates between the two shoes. In short, the forces at play during a significant ankle sprain are too great for any shoe to stop.

Unsurprisingly, strength and balance exercises are considered to be the best form of injury prevention for ankle sprains.

How significant is Joel Embiid's injury?

In short, we don't know. We don't know because the Philadelphia 76ers have not been transparent in communicating the injury.

Journalists initially reported that he was set to undergo surgery for a tear of his lateral meniscus, but the team later corrected these reports by describing it as a procedure to repair a displaced flap.

There is only one injury to the meniscus -- a tear. Tears to the meniscus can result in flaps/folds, as well as detachments/displacements. While the Sixers' statements may technically be accurate, it seems they want to avoid using the terms "tear" and "surgery."

Accuracy is certainly important when dealing with medical information, but it also needs to be understood well. Professional sports has the added burden of communicating such information publicly, as it affects sports betting and ticket sales.

However, an aspect of injury reporting that often gets overlooked is the impact it has on the relationship between the player and the public (fans and media). Before Embiid tore his meniscus, he was visibly hobbling through most of the game due to a previous knee injury. Embiid reportedly played that game due to public criticism that his injury was not severe enough to justify resting.

The Sixers are now indicating an unknown timeline for Embiid's return, with the possibility of a return later this season. However, a repair of the meniscus needs 4-6 months of recovery, which will end Embiid's season. This lack of transparency will only lead to further unnecessary and unjustified criticism of Embiid when he inevitably does not return this season.

Located in the ear, the stapes is the tiniest bone in the body

Although it is only 0.3 cm in length, it plays an important role in hearing. When the stapes is dysfunctional, sound is not properly transmitted to the inner ear, which can cause a gradual loss of hearing.

What is the purpose of injury recovery timelines?

Tyrese Haliburton has been ruled out for the next few games due to "injury management" of his left hamstring injury.

Injuries to soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.) cause a wider, more unpredictable timeline of recovery. This is because they require adequate stress to promote healing, but avoidance of overstressing the tissue too early, which may cause a reaggravation.

At the time of the initial hamstring injury, I had predicted Haliburton would need to rest for at least a few weeks, as indicated by the research. Instead, Haliburton returned to play 11 days later and has surely suffered a reaggravation of the hamstring injury, despite the Indiana Pacers' claims.

Another reason to be mindful of reaggravation is the likelihood of the injury worsening, thereby causing the recovery timeline to become larger/longer.

Are women more likely to injure their knee?

Cora Jade suffered a rupture/complete tear of her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) last week. Her injury marks the 6th woman in NXT to suffer such an injury within the last year.

While NXT's training program is certainly a factor, statistics indicate that female athletes are 2-6 times more likely to suffer an ACL rupture compared to their male counterparts.

One of the many reasons women are more likely to suffer knee injuries, such as an ACL rupture, is due to the sharper angle created between their femur (thigh bone) and tibia (lower leg bone).

How significant is Tyrese Haliburton's injury?

Haliburton suffered an injury to his left leg yesterday, which the Indiana Pacers are calling a 'hamstring strain.'

The true extent of the injury can be confirmed once he undergoes an MRI later today, but the Pacers will likely be without their star for a few weeks, as even the least significant hamstring injuries (grade I/minor strain) require a few weeks of recovery, while a rupture (grade III/full tear) can take multiple months (and potentially end his season).

Due to their proximity to the hamstrings, the adductors (groin) may also be injured, which would further complicate his rehabilitation.
