It's !

Gender-affirming care is associated with much lower rates of depression and suicidality among young people. Psychological research shows that just referring to someone by their preferred name and pronouns can have a dramatically positive effect on their mental health. Good gender-affirming care allows for the exploration of identity and creates a space where doubt, questioning, and reflection are welcomed and embraced.

✨ New podcast episode ✨

I had the pleasure of joining The Genderq***r Menopause Coach podcast with Lasara Firefox Allen, MSW, for a conversation on menopause, informed consent, and non-linear gender trajectories.

We explored how menopause and gender-affirming care often intersect: some people experience menopause because of gender-affirming care, while others seek gender-affirming care because of menopause. Both are profound moments of embodiment and transition, yet they’re rarely discussed together.

Within an informed-consent model, this means bringing menopause into gender-affirming care conversations in ways that are lifespan-oriented, accessible, and free of cisnormative or transnormative assumptions—while also recognizing that detransition and other non-linear gender trajectories may intersect with menopause as people pause, discontinue, or reshape aspects of their transition for various reasons. As healthcare providers, our role is to accompany and support this process of self-determined embodiment at every stage of life.

📝 My article:
“When Cisnormativity and Transnormativity Are in Bed Together: Exposing the Underbelly of Disinformation-Fuelled Detransition Panic”

This piece challenges dominant clinical and cultural narratives about detransition and unpacks the ideological machinery behind today’s disinformation-driven panic.
In a divisive sociopolitical climate, detransition is too often misrepresented—fuelling stigma and harming both detransitioners and gender-diverse communities. This article cuts through the noise to offer nuance and expose the biases distorting public understanding.

New online-first in the journal Canadian Psychology:

'It is time for gender-affirming care: Trans+ experiences and perspectives on presurgical mental health assessment prior to transition-related surgery referral'
- Dupasquier, J. R., Malone, R., Reynolds, K., & Westmacott, R. P.

"In the present study, trans and gender-diverse individuals seeking gender-affirming surgeries mostly reported that presurgical mental health assessment was not helpful in their preparation for gender-affirming surgeries or for their mental health/physical recovery after surgery despite provincial/territorial requirements for these assessments. Most participants wanted to access transition-related surgeries as they would other surgeries: discuss the risks and benefits with their family doctor and receive a direct referral to a surgeon. Results suggest that health care system reform and more flexible, affirming, and supportive presurgical processes may be needed."
