Friendly Reminder: Don’t feel bad about feeling!

Feelings are sensations in the body that we give names to. They aren’t good nor bad. Pleasant or unpleasant, maybe. But not bad.

Often they can be messengers of unmet needs. So don’t feel bad about having them. Do the work to feel them, name them, honour them, and process them. If you need support with that therapy can help.

High School.

It was a tough time for me. In grade 10 I dropped out for what seemed like months on end as I dealt with a depression that I can only recall now as laying on the couch watching The Real World Hawaii on MTV as my world felt all too real to handle and also not real at all.

I didn't exactly have the right supports and mental health was a heck of a lot more stigmatized than it is now.

Today I got the opportunity to speak to grade 11/12 high school students about myself, career choices, boundaries, communication, and selfcare.

What a joy that teachers these days recognize the importance of these conversations. It's what I needed back then.

If you're a teenager and you're struggling please know there are plenty of caring adults that can support you, guide you, and help you. I am just one of those people.

Try , or . You can even text 686868 if you need to talk. DM me if you need resources and I gotchu!

Being a teenager is hard. Being a teenager in a pandemic is even harder.

You are not alone.

Thank you to for allowing me into your virtual classroom.

Creating a Vibe.

When you sit down to do something simple, like reading a book, do you make it an 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚?

As a form of selfcare and mindfulness practice try:

✔️Putting on some soft bossa-nova or jazz music
✔️Making a warm cup of tea
✔️Spraying your favourite fragrance
✔️Covering yourself in a cozy blanket
✔️Turning on lamps instead of overhead lights
✔️Reading from a real book not a kindle

Really get all your senses involved and pay close attention to what feels good in your body. Make adjustments as necessary.

I’m starting by today. What books are you reading?

‘Trauma compromises our ability to engage with others by replacing patterns of connection with patterns of protection’

The nervous system doesn’t tell us who we are, or what we are. It tells us HOW we are.

The patterns of your nervous system could be affecting your ability to regulate and feel safe in relationships.

These patterns are changeable.

One of my clients sent this to me and we lol’ed. 😂
Me: ...what is your diet like? How’s your sleep hygiene? Have you exercised? Spent any time with loved ones? Drank water? What’s your routine like?
People underestimate gradual change through daily habits to feel happier.
I like to think of these “small” daily habits as preventative maintenance for your car. You have to put gas in, change the oil, check the tire pressure and drive it mindfully. Your car will 💯 drive better if you take care of it.
Help yourself along by taking care of the basics for your mind, body, and soul!

Unconscious Whiteness.
“It is a privilege of whiteness to not have to think of racial identity—the lack of needing to think about it is privilege.”
Whiteness has been thought to be neutral, normative, and average. Racism isn’t just something that happens to outside of us and puts others at a disadvantage.
Unconscious whiteness (better known as “not being racist”) isn’t an excuse anymore (not that it ever should have been.)
Acknowledgement of unearned power and privilege alone does not give white people a pass on critically examining our lack of curiosity regarding the privileged lived experiences of whiteness and our “unconscious” participation and perpetuation of systems of oppression and racism that have contributed to a wholly different lived experience for people of colour.
Peggy McIntosh said: “Describing white privilege makes one newly accountable”. Which is to say, we can’t un-know this.
Having become conscious of your whiteness what will you do to lessen it, or better yet, end it?
Here is a handy guide that may help facilitate these conversations.

A new anxiety now.
At first many of us had anxiety about adjusting to quarantine and working from home.
Now I’ve noticed a trend of people who actually have improved mental health because of the quarantine and are experiencing anxiety about returning to “normal” as restrictions are starting to loosen.
People are anxious about the commute to work, the busyness of life, after work activities, driving their kids to sports, dealing with coworkers and bosses that drain their energy, having their senses assaulted by busy stores, and losing progress on hobbies and wellness that they’ve been able to achieve during this global slow down.
They’re asking: how can we navigate our anxieties, how do we ask for what we need, and find balance in our lives as we move to our “new normal”?
If you’ve felt odd because you’ve found joy, peace and pleasure in the quarantine you’re not alone. If you’re feeling anxiety now about going back to “normal” that’s normal, too.

Authenticity.
For a long time I tried to act the part. Being a leader, a therapist, a woman meant you had to act, be, and look a certain way.
My greatest skill: adaptability - but sometimes at the expense of my authenticity.
I meet clients ‘where they are’ whatever that means. I ask them to be real. I ask them to explore who they are at the deepest levels. I ask them to access the place in their soul that existed before the world got a hold of them. To find their authenticity.
This is what I might wear when I do that. What is your first thought? That I look unprofessional? That I look different than what you thought therapists look like? For a long time, me too.
The weight of societal expectation is too much to type but the post “Be a Lady” by .girls.girls.magazine breaks it down nicely.
I hope my realness will help to make your realness feel okay in this office, and out in the world.
Be you, boo. Your time here is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life.✌🏻

Push-up challenges, virtual workouts, recipes, craft ideas, homeschooling, working from home. Aye! It’s a lot. Plus, you know, pandemic.
People deal with stress in different ways please do not guilt yourself into thinking you need to be doing everything that people suggest or what seems trendy during isolation.
Sometimes resting is the most productive thing you can do for yourself. Keep those stress levels low and kick that guilt to the curb.

Sometimes I say: “I’m not going to take that personally, even if you want me to.”
Nobody deserves to be treated poorly but if you look at someone’s behaviour as a reflection of the state of their relationship with themselves, rather than a reflection of your value and worth as a person it can take the sting out and help you to maintain your self-esteem.
If you’re the one being unkind maybe it’s time for some self-reflection. What heavy burden are you carrying and trying to pass on?

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
Today was a tough day.
A long day.
People are struggling.
But what is beautiful about this situation none of asked for is the potential for healing - healing ourselves and healing the planet.
Please don’t lose hope.
Things will get better. ❤️
