Lyme disease is more complex than many people are told.Â
A growing body of research shows that Borrelia burgdorferi â the spirochete bacteria that causes Lyme disease â can persist in some patients despite standard antibiotic treatment.Â
A comprehensive review of the medical literature by Fesler, Stricker, and Johnson (published in Advances in Infectious Diseases) examined 25 human studies and 10 animal studies, documenting persistent infection through methods such as tissue microscopy, culture, and xenodiagnosis.Â
Lyme disease is also far more common than once believed. In 2021, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its estimates, reporting approximately 476,000 new Lyme diagnoses each year â making Lyme significantly more common than many well-known infectious diseases.Â
What does this mean for patients?Â
It means that ongoing symptoms are not imagined â and that healing often requires a Lyme-informed, individualized approach.Â
At BioHeal Ottawa, Dr. Marie Matheson works with patients using a holistic, patient-specific lens â considering immune health, inflammation, co-infections, detoxification pathways, nervous system regulation, and personal history. There is no single protocol for Lyme disease â because there is no single Lyme patient.Â
â¨Â Most importantly: there is hope.Â
With informed care, the right support, and a practitioner who understands the nuance of Lyme disease, many patients do improve and regain quality of life.Â
