Why is solidarity with Palestine a worker's issue?

Learn more at this online panel organized by PSAC, Independent Jewish Voices, and Labour For Palestine.

The webinar will take place on November 1st, at 7pm. See more details in the link below.

⚜️⬇️ - Join PSAC-NCR in collaboration with Labour 4 Palestine and Independent Jewish Voices Canada for a webinar this Wednesday, November 1 at 7PM to build international solidarity and heed the urgent call to action of trade unionists in Palestine to speak out and take action in the face of injustice as trade unions have done historically.

Global events have made it clear that it is more important now than ever for an international workers movement to support the ongoing struggle for the liberation of people in Palestine and for an equal society for all people in Israel and Palestine.

Why is solidarity with Palestine a worker's issue?

It was the push from unions and workers worldwide that helped lead to the end of apartheid in the 1990s in South Africa. The labour movement and international solidarity has the power to help bring an end to the atrocities happening currently in Gaza and a permanent end to the cycles of violence caused by 75 years of occupation.

Unions have a long tradition of international solidarity and uniting as workers around the world to fight social and economic equality and to advocate for quality public services and human rights.

As a union that opposes all forms of discrimination including antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and all forms of hate, it is imperative that we fight injustice wherever we see it.

Speakers will also touch on the ongoing repression of free speech when it comes to criticizing the state of Israel or when it comes to showing solidarity with the Palestinian people and how you can obtain representation from your union.

We will hear from speakers involved in solidarity work here locally in Ottawa but also those who are directly affected in Palestine.

So join us this coming Wednesday to learn more about how you, as a worker and union member, can take action to fight for a just and lasting peace in Israel-Palestine.

The panel will be moderated by PSAC-NCR Regional Executive Vice-President Alex Silas and will include:

➡️ Judy Rebick, Independent Jewish Voices
➡️ Hassan Husseini, Labour 4 Palestine
➡️ Wassim Garzouzi, Labour Lawyer
➡️ Rana Daher, Birzeit University Union of Professors and Employees, Palestine.

English/French translation will be available.

This event is open to PSAC members and members of the public.

➡️ Hassan Husseini, Labour 4 Palestine

We are proud of all of our members who showed up in support of trans kids on Wednesday. It continues to be crucial for all of us to fight back against rising far-right hate in Canada.

To join the CUPE 4600 Anti-Hate Flying squad, contact vp.external@cupe4600.ca

Our flying squad is a fast moving response team! We show up to counter hate wherever it rears its ugly head. We act to defend marginalized communities and individuals, and are proud to take action against homophobia, racism, transphobia, sexism, fascism, classism, and all other kinds of hate!

"One very instructive example for doing so going forward came from CUPE 4600 (education workers at Carleton University in Ottawa) who mobilized their flying squad to participate in the local counterdemonstration.
Flying squads are among the best examples of rank-and-file self-organizing. Rapid response networks that can be mobilized on short notice, flying squads are effective in doing direct actions and solidarity work within unions, with workers in other workplaces, and in communities.
Flying squads that I have been active in have supported anti-poverty movements and Indigenous land reclamations in addition to doing picket line solidarity, putting people directly on the line and ready to act."

On September 20, 2023, a hodgepodge of far right forces organized hate fests under the “1 Million March 4 Children” banner in dozens of cities across so-called Canada. Organizing groups and individuals represented a who’s who of fascist, far right, transphobic anti-2SLGTBQIA+ operations in the...

I’m a former CUPE 4600 member, and I have massive respect for the resolve I’ve seen from the union in this latest round of bargaining.

Cupe4600 joins unions that have beaten Doug Ford’s wage-capping . An unconstitutional law defied in the streets.

They’ve won pay increases, including retroactive pay increases. Intellectual property rights for all academic workers. Major steps forward.

Let’s tip our hat to the hard-working Cupe4600 negotiators and members who made this happen.

Notably Noreen Cauley, Cupe4600’s President and nursing-on-the-picket-line mom :)
