Did you know in 1918, the first cases of “Spanish flu” in Canada were seen?

Over the next few years, the Great Influenza pandemic would kill 50,000 Canadians and more than 15 million worldwide.

Stay with us as we look back on the moments that shaped lung health in Canada.

A new article in the The Lancet by Simon Couillard of Université Laval and others lays out the gaping discrepancy between the global burden of lung disease and the lack of funding for research and policy action. It's time to shift the conversation on lung disease!

Respiratory diseases constitute one of the most pressing, yet underappreciated global health burdens.1 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death globally in 2019,1 is projected to affect approximately 590 million people by 2050.2 Severe asthma remains poorly cont...

Today, we’re honouring Pioneers in To***co Control like Neil Collishaw, who worked for decades to protect Canadians and the world from the harmful effects of to***co.

He played a pivotal role developing and implementing national legislation against the use and promotion of to***co products and in the development of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on To***co Control.

Sadly, Neil passed away in October 2024 but his legacy will live on.

We are also recognizing Lynn McDonald, who was serving as a member of Parliament representing Broadview-Greenwood when she authored and introduced a private members’ bill in Canadian Parliament in 1986.

Bill C-204, which would become the Non-Smokers Health Act, was passed in 1988, becoming the first legislation in the world to establish smoke-free workplaces and public spaces.

A US study into ni****ne ingestion by children under 6 shows the danger of ni****ne pouches.

"The study found that ni****ne pouches were associated with a 150% greater risk of serious medical effects and were twice as likely to lead to hospitalization than other smokeless ni****ne products swallowed by children, like gums, lozenges, e-liquids, tablets and powders."

Ni****ne pouches are a fast-growing source of ni****ne poisoning in young children, according to a new study.

Ever heard of bronchiectasis?

It’s a lung condition where the airways become stretched out and widened, so much so that little pockets form. These pockets trap germs, dust and mucus, leading to repeated infections.

It creates a vicious cycle: infections damage the airways, and damaged airways lead to more infections.

Bronchiectasis can affect people of all ages. In adults, it’s often caused by past lung infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis. In kids and infants, it’s usually linked to congenital issues like cystic fibrosis or immune disorders.

We're in the thick of wildfire season, and even if you're nowhere near the flames, the air around you might not be safe to breathe.

Wildfire smoke can raise the level of fine particles in the air, impacting your health—especially if you live with a chronic lung condition.

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) rates air pollution on a scale from 1 to 10+. The higher the number, the greater the health risk. For people with lung disease, even a score of 4 can trigger symptoms.

Check your local AQHI regularly and take steps to protect your lungs. Be sure to check out our recent Heatwaves and Hazy Skies webinar on our YouTube channel:

It started with a conversation.

At the Canadian Medical Association's annual meeting in Ottawa, a group of concerned attendees came together around a shared goal: to stop the spread of tuberculosis across the country.

Out of that moment, in 1900, the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Consumption and Other Forms of Tuberculosis was born.

Its mission was clear and ambitious: educate the public, push for strong policies, improve access to care and work alongside governments and communities to protect lung health.

Membership? One dollar a year. A lifetime membership? Just $80.

This was the beginning of a movement that would grow into the organization we are today.

As we mark 125 years of progress, stay with us as we look back on the moments that shaped our story and consider donating $125 toward the future of lung health in Canada. 🍁
