Spirituality Shouldn’t Be Used to Silence Truth
Dismissing someone as “low vibrational” for speaking up against injustice is a classic example of spiritual bypassing, which misrepresents true spirituality. True spirituality isn’t about ignoring or suppressing uncomfortable truths; it’s about awareness, growth, and transformation, both personally and collectively.
Speaking up against injustice requires courage and integrity. A spiritual path that values love, compassion, and healing should recognize that addressing harm is necessary for true collective progress. Avoiding or shaming others for doing so often serves to maintain privilege or avoid discomfort, rather than fostering real harmony.
Gatekeeping in spirituality is another harmful tactic, where people try to control or limit access to spiritual knowledge, practices, or communities. This creates an “us vs. them” mentality, which contradicts the core of spirituality — unity, growth, and connection. While some traditions may require initiations or structured teachings to ensure a deeper understanding, these practices are not necessarily forms of gatekeeping.
However, when access is denied purely out of elitism or personal control, it becomes damaging. This goes against the true essence of spirituality, which should foster inclusivity, personal growth, and interconnectedness, rather than creating division or restricting access to knowledge. Authentic spirituality should always encourage openness, connection, and the free flow of understanding.

Real-World Impact
This isn’t just a theoretical issue. I’ve seen it happen far too often, even now as a friend of mine is being attacked for using her platform to speak out about global issues. Instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue, some people are shutting her down under the guise of “spirituality.” It’s a common tactic — using terms like “high vibrations” or “positivity” to silence those who challenge uncomfortable truths.
But real spirituality isn’t about avoiding reality—it’s about confronting it with wisdom, integrity, and compassion. Growth doesn’t come from bypassing difficult conversations but from engaging with them in a way that seeks truth and justice.
Gatekeeping and spiritual bypassing both create division. Gatekeeping restricts access to knowledge, deciding who is “worthy.” Spiritual bypassing shames people into silence, making them feel spiritually inferior for addressing real-world issues. Both tactics discourage open discussion and reinforce harmful power dynamics.
True spirituality encourages accountability, awareness, and collective healing—not suppressing truth under the guise of “high vibrations.”
