Mental health issues are becoming more prevalent in our communities and therefore Carefor staff are seeing them more while providing care. Home care staff need additional training to help manage some of these behaviours in order to protect themselves and their clients.
Ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, Carefor PSW, Elisabeth Bell offered the first session of a series on Non-Violent Crisis Intervention workshops to help Client Care Workers and Personal Support Workers better equip themselves as they go into people’s homes and the community.
Elisabeth said, “There can be a lot of challenges that can come with providing care in people’s homes. We’re seeing way more mental health issues in the community. Training like this will help staff have tools to prevent and de-escalate situations. They’ll help keep staff and clients safe.”
Carefor Client Care Worker, Lisa Parkinson who attended the training said, “We have a lot of great clients, but we can have some that are very distressed, which can lead to aggressive behaviour and abuse. It helps us approach clients and help them with coping strategies.”
These sessions will run through October and November, being hosted by Elisabeth and Carefor Social Worker, Marc Viau. Funding for this training was provided by the Bell Let’s Talk grant. Bell Let's Talk
