On , we are proud to release a special episode of The HQ podcast. This episode explores one of the most difficult—and most important—topics in healthcare: su***de.

Talking about su***de is never easy. Health professionals may find themselves unsure where to start, what to say, or how much of themselves to share. There’s the fear of saying the wrong thing, and the even greater challenge of knowing how to respond when someone says, “Yes, I am thinking about su***de.” In that moment, what is your shared responsibility to both address su***de and instill hope?

In this episode, we bring together a remarkable panel of guests who share both professional expertise and lived experience to help explore these questions and more. Together, they open an honest conversation about how to talk about su***de, how to instill hope, and why learning the skills to do so can be lifesaving.

Listen to the full episode now and join the conversation.

It is critically important that we learn the skills to engage in meaningful conversations about su***de. So please, after you’ve listened to this episode, share it with your colleagues and networks and explore the free “Talking About Su***de” course, developed in partnership with the Mental Health Commission of Canada Commission de la santé mentale du Canada.

By enrolling, and encouraging others to do the same, you can help reduce stigma and strengthen the capacity of healthcare providers to instill hope when it matters most.

"When done well, value-based care aligns clinical excellence with sustainability — putting patients, not procedures, at the centre. But to deliver on this promise, we must first confront one of our most entrenched barriers: our fractured health data systems."

HealthCareCAN is proud to highlight a critical new learning opportunity developed through the ongoing partnership between CHA Learning—our healthcare professional development division—and the Mental Health Commission of Canada Commission de la santé mentale du Canada (MHCC).

Accessible and free to all healthcare professionals, Talking About Su***de: Empowering Healthcare Providers, Instilling Hope in Clients is a fully online micro learning course designed to equip healthcare professionals in all roles with the skills and confidence to talk about su***de and offer hope to those in their care.

Su***de remains a significant and complex public health challenge. Each year, approximately 4,500 Canadians die by su***de—an average of more than 10 people every day. Many more live with thoughts of su***de, often in silence.

It is a crisis that does not discriminate, affecting individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and regions. And yet, the signs are often missed or go unspoken—even by those best positioned to help.

That’s why this course is so important.

Talking About Su***de provides learners with the practical skills, knowledge, and confidence to ask the right questions and engage in an open, supportive conversation that could help save a life. It includes:

✅ Scenario-based learning to build real-world confidence

✅ Tools and resources for authentic, compassionate engagement

✅ Best practices in su***de risk assessment and safety planning

✅ A strong emphasis on trust, empathy, collaboration, and client-centred care

The course is self-paced, can be completed in as little as 3 hours, and is entirely free to enrol. Learners can apply their learnings immediately—supporting safer, more compassionate care for those at risk.
