There are many assumptions and stereotypes that a person thinks of and/or believes when it comes to OCD. Some of these assumptions stem from a lack of understanding of what the characteristics of OCD are. It is common for people to see obsessions and compulsions as one and the same. However, obsessions are typically thoughts-based and compulsions are behaviourally-based.

Other assumptions and stereotypes of OCD, come from people not knowing what it really entails. It is not something someone can just get over, rather it can be debilitating to a person's life. It is a matter that an individual needs to learn coping strategies in order to manage their every day life.

It is not always easy to get the support from others when it comes to changing one's thoughts and/or behaviours based on OCD's belief system. In part, the difficulty may stem from the frustration that others may have experienced when it comes to interacting when OCD is occurring.

Therefore, gaining and maintaining the social support needed requires a level of honesty of one's experience with OCD and the goals when it comes to coping and managing with OCD's thoughts and/or behaviours.

Exposure and Prevention therapy is commonly used for OCD. Throughout, the exposure and prevention a person needs to keep motivated and consistent with exposure and belief in change.

The first part is exposure, which requires to create a ladder hierarchy of what is worried and/or feared. For example, if a person is doing exposure therapy for contamination. A person would identify from 0-100, what surface and/or object they would not touch or have touch them. This then begins the process of active and gradual exposure to the situations.

The second part is prevention. A script is created to minimize and make less influential the OCD's belief system. The script is written by way of acceptance and the inclusion of the motivation towards the change the person is seeking.

It is important to remember that it is probable that OCD can be triggered, which is why it becomes important to use prevention strategies, when needed.

OCD can be understood as a belief system which a person finds reasons to support it. This belief system impacts and influences a person's way of thinking and what they pursue in life. It is why it is important to separate a person's own values from the narrative that OCD sets. CBT is an approach that is used in order to help manage OCD. A focus is placed on an individual's thoughts and their behaviours in response to the fears and worries about a situation.

The fear and worry that drives obsessions and compulsions instils the need to avoid any potential negative outcome. It is why the CBT approach is used, as it identifies the cognitive distortions and the problem behaviours. Living with OCD can be a burden to those who have to figure out how to cope with its impact every day. It directly and indirectly impacts social relationships in how a person interacts with others and perceives a situation. It also impacts the assumed outcome of a situation, which is never to the benefit of the person living with OCD. The fear of the worst-case scenario always has evidence to support it as fact. Obsessions and compulsions primarily originate from the same sources which are anxiety, worry and fear. Taking this into consideration, obsessions and compulsions can and do manifest in different ways.

For obsessions, the focus is on a specific thought. The person believes in this thought due to past experiences which support the assumed negative outcome.

For compulsion, the focus is on prevention. More specifically, it is about preventing the feared negative outcome which can cause unknown harm to themselves or others.
