Yesterday's National Volunteer Action Strategy (NVAS) Youth Roundtable in Waterloo Region reminded us why listening to young leaders matters. 🌱

Hosted by Volunteer Canada and University of Waterloo's Youth & Innovation Project, we gathered at United College's GreenHouse to discuss how volunteering can better serve the next generation. The conversation was rich, nuanced, and full of actionable insights.

Here's what we heard:

Match the process to the context. A special event shouldn't require the same application bureaucracy as a long-term placement in a hospital. Right-sizing processes makes volunteering more accessible.

Recognize evolving motivations. Early teens volunteer for required hours. Older teens build pre-career experience. Young professionals engage with causes they care about and local issues that matter. Each stage deserves different support.

"Be a good person outside of your metrics." Our attendee, Mariam's quote hit hard; so many young people chase 98% grades at the expense of being well-rounded community members. We need to normalize that meaningful contribution isn't just academic.

Volunteer managers are the bridge. They can make or break the experience. High-touch support during one-off events prevents volunteers from feeling lost. Building relationships, encouraging growth within organizations, and understanding what each role truly requires -this is where retention happens.

If volunteering is a career pathway, we have to act like it. Offer CPR and first aid training. Provide certificates. Share language volunteers can use on LinkedIn. Create mentorship opportunities and consider junior volunteer manager roles to connect with younger participants.

Intergenerational connection is craved. Young volunteers want mentors. Pairing generations in volunteer roles creates value for everyone involved.

The difference between formal and informal volunteering matters, and representation in communities—through local chapters, strategic collaboration, and persistent presence—builds trust and participation. Don't give up.

Thank you to everyone who brought their lived experience to the table. These conversations are shaping a national strategy, and your voices are driving real change. Check out our upcoming virtual roundtables or learn more about the NVAS: https://ow.ly/mMQL50X8COC

On Monday, TD Canada employees volunteered with Furniture Bank in Etobicoke, where they spent the morning assembling, painting, and reupholstering gently used furniture.

These restored items will help alleviate furniture poverty, creating safe, functional, and comfortable homes for individuals and families in the local community, many of whom have experienced hardships.

Thank you to the TD team for turning teamwork into meaningful impact at this hands-on workshop!
