What does Statistics Canada's 2023 GSS-GVP tell us about how women and men volunteer differently in Canada?

This slide deck explores the data: volunteer rates, average annual hours, total contributions, and how both have shifted between 2018 and 2023.

Data: Statistics Canada, GSS-GVP 2023 (Table 45-10-0040-01)

Racialized Canadians gave 936 million volunteer hours in 2023, mostly through informal, everyday support. Yet when it comes to board and decision-making roles, they remain significantly underrepresented compared to non-racialized volunteers.

Statistics Canada data makes the picture clear: strong community contribution, weak structural inclusion.

In Fredericton, NB, UPS Canada employees and community members took part in a creative art-based volunteer activity focused on supporting local homeless and at-risk youth.

Joining forces with Youth In Transition, participants painted personalized tote bags and added handwritten notes designed to encourage and uplift young people. Each tote reflected care, creativity, and a commitment to showing up for youth in meaningful ways.

Hands-on activities like this help strengthen local youth-serving organizations while giving employees a tangible way to support their community.
