I love this photo of baby between worlds 😍 It’s one of the most magical moments of birth, especially in the water! Babies emerge so much more relaxed with a gentle transition, with soft voices, sometimes their mother’s roar, and straight into her arms.

“When we hear the word “consent” in the birth space we may often jump to the worst case scenario but the reality is that the lack of consent in the birth space is a much more sneaky issue.
We hear things like
"You're going to feel my touch."
"I'm going to check your cervix now."
"We are going to start Pitocin."
"I'm going to break your water/give you a membrane sweep while I'm here."
But just because they are speaking it like a fact does not mean they gave you an informed opportunity to understand and CONSENT.
In order to give consent in the birth space, there must be a conversation. YES, even during the moments of pushing or laboring, you should have the ability to provide or withhold consent. Your partner or birth team should be given the opportunity to speak for you if absolutely necessary.
You retain the right to refuse touching, examinations, medications, etc., within the birth room, just as you do outside of it. Your body does not lose its autonomy simply because you're in the process of giving birth.
Understanding this can have such a powerful impact on the dynamics around your birth.
