This is the time of the year that we experience stuffy nose and sinus pressure du to the weather change and allergies season at our door. Large Intestine 20 (LI 20), known in Chinese as Ying Xiang, is used to dispel wind, open up the nasal passages and clear potential heat. Massage this point with firm pressure a few times a day to have a some relief.

Lately, I have been using this auricular point more often on my patient to help for smoking cessation and for some over stressful event that some of my patients encountered.

The sympathetic point balances the nervous systems and has a strong analgesic effects. Shen Men has a relaxing effect and helps alleviate anxiety and nervousness that may accompany
withdrawals.

What's that smell?

Have you come in clinic and smell something similar to burning grass? Yes, it's the acupuncturist doing weird thing again!

Moxibustion is derived from the name of the wormwood plant (also known as A
Mogusa in Japanese) that is often used in Traditional Chinese Medicinal practices. In more modern forms of moxibustion, the wormwood plant is crushed, placed into a special paper, wrapped and then lit. When lit, it’s then held above the point to be warmed or placed on the skin. Don’t worry! The flame is removed before overheating occurs and does not damage the skin.

I often using it for my fertility patients, cold constitution, digestive issues and sometimes joint pain.

Labour Prep Acupuncture

Ideally starting at 36 weeks, pregnant woman will receive 1 or 2 acupuncture session weekly until birth. Pre-birth acupuncture will encourage the mother’s body to naturally release prostaglandins to soften and ripen the cervix for labor, and oxytocin to trigger contractions, in return reducing labour time. It also helps to calm the mind to reduce fears and anxiety during the labour.

Pre labour acupuncture has been shown to reduce rates of medical induction, intervention and caesarean, result in faster and less painful labour and reduced levels of anxiety. Also called Cervical Ripening Treatment, the pre labour treatments focus on softening the cervix and preparing the pelvis for labour and delivery.

A clinical study in New Zealand (Betts& Lennox, 2006) showed that giving women pre-birth acupuncture resulted in:

• 35% reduction in medical inductions (43% reduction in women having their first baby)
• 31% reduction in the epidurals
• 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery
• 9 % increase in normal vaginal births

What is Endometriosis exactly?

It is the presence and growth of endometrial tissue in locations outside of the uterus. These cells may appear on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, peritoneal tissue, ligaments, or other structures in the abdominal cavity.

Displaced endometrial tissue responds to cyclic hormonal changes, proliferating and shedding outside of the uterus. The bleeding is accompanied by inflammation and this recurrent inflammation can caused scarring and adhesions.

Many theories exist on the etiology (story) of this condition, but a new suggestion is that the immune system is involve and it make a lot of sense to me, so I am following the development and research about it closely.

But what I love even more it’s that Chinese Medicine is an individual and holistic approach so for every patient, my approach would be completely in alignment with their own symptoms, presentation and all their other body system.

The month of March is recognized as Endometriosis Awareness Month. Increasing awareness of endometriosis is imperative as so many women spend years unaware their symptoms are abnormal. Delays in diagnosis and treatment can negatively impact education, work and quality of life for those with endometriosis.

Women with symptomatic endometriosis face chronic and sometimes debilitating pain. Asymptomatic and symptomatic women alike may experience significant fertility problems caused by this condition.

Common symptoms:
PMS
Dysmenorrhea
Infertility
Pain with in*******se
Generalized pelvic pain throughout the month without other explanation
Nausea
Bladder problems
Frequent infections
Painful with bowel movement or urination
Ovulation pain
Abdominal pain
Lower back pain
Depression, lethargy

Acupuncture treatment can significantly decrease the severity of endometriosis and its symptoms. Effects are cumulative so longer term treatment is linked with greater improvement.

According to research acupuncture seems to promote blood circulation and regulate hormones. It also appears to have an anti-inflammatory effect and is effective for pain relief because of it’s effect on blood chemistry and in particular endorphin levels.
One study concluded “Acupuncture can alleviate the pain of dysmenorrhoea and reduce peripheral blood CA-125. As a result, the therapy could be applied as a complementary treatment for endometriosis-related pain.”

The Ontario government is backing down on a controversial plan to deregulate acupuncture and other forms of traditional Chinese medicine, saying it will opt for Chinese-language exams instead.

The Ontario provincial government wants to de-regulate Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, which means it would no longer be considered a Regulated Health Profession. This is NOT in the best interest of the public. If this moves forward that means literally anyone can perform Acupuncture or TCM without any training - this is a Public Health & Safety Issue. Not to mention the potential of insurance companies no longer providing coverage to patients who receive treatment by highly trained Acupuncturists and TCM providers. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Repeal Act, 2022 of Bill 88, Working for Workers Act, 2022, Schedule 5 is not for the benefit of Ontarians.

The Yang Water Tiger Year

The new year begins on February 1st and the tiger emerges on February 4th.

The Year of the Rat (2020) was about survival, and the Year of the Ox (2021) was about anchoring ourselves in a new reality. The Year of the Tiger will be about making big changes. Expect things to rapidly change this year. Sudden disruptions in different aspects of our life should be expected.

Some of us will thrive through taking great leaps, while others who resist or don’t like changes will have a harder time. While it’s important to follow our intuition and run with our wildest dreams, that means we also must keep our egos in check. The Water Tiger is extremely driven and can be impatient, but their goal is always to do what’s best for everyone, not just for themselves.

Overall, this is a year for switching careers, new relations or getting back into creative projects. Life is short so why not be happy?
