Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists

Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists Association of health professionals in the field of medical radiation technology

Founded in 1942 by a coalition of provincial associations, the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is Canada’s national professional association and certifying body for medical radiation technologists and therapists across the country. There are four disciplines represented among CAMRT’s membership: radiological technology, magnetic resonance, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. As the national professional association, the CAMRT is the national body in a partnership with ten provincial associations who share a common membership of approximately 12,000. CAMRT is the national organization for the medical radiation technology profession and has the ability to bring to the table all relevant stakeholders. As the national certifying body, CAMRT develops and administers national certification exams for the four disciplines among its membership. The exams test against a pre-determined standard that is reflective of the competency required to practice safely and effectively at the entry-to-practice level in the current Canadian healthcare environment. CAMRT is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by numerous committees of member volunteers. The CAMRT Foundation exists to support its members and the advancement of the profession. While it is a separate entity from the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT), the Foundation complements and enhances the educational activities of the professional association and its members.

Did you know that X-rays played a vital role in battlefield medicine during World War I? Marie Curie was a driving force behind this advancement—she developed mobile X-ray units, affectionately called “petites Curies,” and trained around 150 women to operate them on the front lines to assist surgeons. These units performed more than a million X-ray examinations throughout the war, marking a pivotal moment in the emergence of radiography as a profession.
