There is a winter storm coming and the boys are stocked with food and tea. We will take them out some hot water this evening. Neco didn’t want his jacket and he has horse hair, so he’s much better insulated than the donkeys.

We enjoy giving young people a chance to experience working on a farm. One of our most successful youths, Olivia Furlong, (below) is now into her fourth year at the Royal Military College.

For three years she learned to use tools, feed and care for animals large and small, filled Mason jars with veggies, and even built her own projects. We taught her some stuff. However, she also taught us the basics of equine care. She worked very hard and became a friend to us all.

In recognition of what kids can do when given a chance, we will be starting a scholarship for future young women. If you volunteer for us, for 12 weeks a year, for three consecutive years, you can be awarded the Olivia Furlong scholarship for further study in the Agricultural Arts.

We will be discussing the amounts and protocoles with our legal advisors. Stay Tuned!

Congrats Olivia for inspiring a new generation of girls!

When you take on an a new animal that is already sick, there is always a risk that they may not make it. Especially when it’s not clear why they are ill.

Bert arrived at our farm with his son, Bey. He was a cutie. Unfortunately, while Bert quickly put on weight, Bey struggled.

We didn’t know why and we worked with our Vet to help him. What we did know was that his testicles were much too small for a donkey his age. That was only one red flag that didn’t offer us much at the time.

Bey passed away on a cold night in February. We drove his body to the large mammal school at Guelph U. where he had a professional autopsy undertaken.

The doctor found that he had a stomach full of hay, so he should have been warm, but it looked insifficiently metabolized. All of his organs, like his testicles, including his liver, and heart, were much too smalll for his body size. He had apparently been born premature and although his body grew, his internal organs did not.

Nothing could have saved him. He most likely died of cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, it’s left us all feeling heartbroken ever since.

We miss you, Bey, and we will remeber you as our friend.

Many will ask us why we have we changed from helping Veterans to helping animals?

After speaking to a wise, female veteran consultant, we realized that the federal government policy had moved on from its focus on assisting the groups of Veterans at the heart of our Nonprofit.

We always had a very lean operation, the monies from VAC ended in 2023, we received no further funding. (If you wish to see the books, please contact Elaine and she will share them.)

From 2015-2025 we ran a half dozen programs, from bee keeping, to soap making, canning, gardening, and animal assisted therapy. We met hundreds of veterans and shared thousands of hours in-person and online. It changed us.

We honour your stories.

We continued to have interest in helping, but more and more of my slim pension was going to keep us afloat. The only way to save our little farm, was to reincorporate as a charity to give santuary to Donkeys and Mules.

Our focus may be different, but our animals need to interact with their friends.

Donkeys remember over 200 individual faces over spans of 60 years. I guarantee if they have not seen you in a while, they will be thrilled to see YOU again.

This is Neco, our rude and haughty mule. Neco has a most unfortunate past, but he’s come a very long way. We got Neco to brighten Bert’s spirits as his son, Bey, had passed away the first winter we had him. I’ll tell Bey‘s story later.

Neco came from a little acreage in Pontiac. He had been in a car accident while pulling an Amish buggy and faced multiple auctions to sell him for glue.

His last owner was sad to see him go, but she and her children are always welcome at the farm.

He’s just scared and very smart. We just don’t put too much pressure on him and let him do what he needs to do to feel safe.

He loves our special needs kids and they love him. He’s become quick friends with Rory, but they tend to get into much mischief.

He is beautiful, so we just love him.

Transitioning to a Donkey and Mule Sanctuary brings many changes. One thing that won’t change is our commitment to a safe place for everybody, particularly our neurodivergent and 2SLGBTQ youth. We will not be painting over any rainbows here.

This is Bert. He’s about 14 years old and very sweet with his droopy bottom lip and extra long ears. He came to us gaunt and suffering from laminitus. He had been forced to forage trees for leaves his whole life rather than getting nutritions hay.

Bert is an independant guy, but loves his herdmates. He can be bad for the farrier, but will mostly work with him if he gets to suck on a mint during the process. He is not ridden, but is proud of his pulling gear and enjoys his cart work for exercice.

He’s also very photogenic and knows it. He loves being filmed and photographed and has made many friends over the years, including the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, who gave him a Silver coin for his work with veterans.

A dream is a plan not yet accomplished.

This is the type of barn we are going to build. The upstairs will be for crafting and other programs and the downstairs will hold the tractor, hay and donkey stalls. Our community of long ears and long ear lovers will have many activities to keep them busy for generations. We hope you will come join us!

We feed our donkeys and mule soaked beet pulp during the winter to keep them hydrated and help vary their diet.

These Firehouse Subs pickle barrels are the worlds best farm buckets. They are rubberized and have licking lids, for four dollars each! That’s an unsolicited endorsement!
