Thank you to Scott Aitchison, Shadow Minister for Housing, Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State of Rural Development, and Billy Morin, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Services, for meeting with us during part one of our Hill Day.

We had the opportunity to discuss the crucial role planners play in addressing the housing crisis, supporting nation-building projects, and strengthening communities across Canada.

Now more than ever, planning matters. It shapes where we live, how we move, and how we work. Every day, planners influence our lives in ways we often don’t notice. From helping to speed up housing development to designing spaces that keep people safe and connected, their work is the backbone of community life.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and working together to foster vibrant communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

🌍 Sustainable growth requires expertise in land use, housing supply and demand, and community service delivery.

Many rural, remote, and Indigenous communities lack access to professional planning staff, limiting their ability to participate in federal programs and meet infrastructure needs.

We recommend that the federal government establish an external planning advisory service to provide cost-efficient support to under-resourced communities and create a national youth planners corps.

🌍 Une croissance durable nécessite une expertise en matière d'aménagement du territoire, d'offre et de demande de logements et de prestation de services communautaires.

De nombreuses collectivités rurales, éloignées et autochtones n'ont pas accès à du personnel de planification professionnel, ce qui limite leur capacité à participer aux programmes fédéraux et à répondre à leurs besoins en matière d'infrastructures.

Afin de soutenir la croissance durable des collectivités, nous recommandons au gouvernement fédéral de mettre en place un service externe de conseil en urbanisme afin d'apporter un soutien rentable aux collectivités disposant de ressources insuffisantes et créer un corps national de jeunes urbanistes.

A big thank you to Joanna Averley, Chief Planner of England, and her Chief of Staff, Jo Pearce, for inviting our team to meet with them at the British High Commission in Ottawa.

It was a valuable opportunity to exchange insights on shared planning challenges, including the housing crisis and increasing wildfire activity, and to discuss best practices and policy approaches that can help us all move forward.

📌 The Canadian Institute of Planners welcomes the federal government’s announcement to establish Build Canada Homes, a new central agency aimed at stimulating housing construction and investment, and addressing the housing affordability crisis in Canada.

“We note the undertaking to adopt an all levels of government approach to ensure these new units are built with the necessary infrastructure and wrap-around support services to create permanently affordable, whole communities for those most in need of safe, stable housing,” said Lesley Cabott RPP, FCIP, ICD D, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

CIP and Canadian professional planners look forward to leveraging their expertise to support the advancement of Build Canada Homes projects in communities across Canada.

📣 Project Summary Applications are open for the 2026 Canadian Awards for Planning Excellence!

The application process is just three short steps:

👉 Submit a project summary telling us what the project is, who was involved, and how it demonstrates excellence
👉 The Jury will determine a shortlist of applicants who will be notified by November 2025
👉 Shortlisted applicants will submit a more detailed application by April 2026

Projects can include plans, studies, publications, tools, media, and more!

📌 The National Building Code, in its current form, is increasingly complex, and approval timelines vary widely by municipality.

In the next federal budget, planners are calling for a review and modernization of the National Building Code to identify opportunities for affordability, efficiency, and modular compatibility without compromising safety.
