Dr. Tara's Holiday Clean Meal Plan is coming this week.
To prepare for the madness that is the holiday season, every year I create a one-week clean meal plan to use in November. Filled with new, delicious and healthy recipes, it's a great way to prepare for the "maybe not so healthy" weeks in December. Proceeds go the Ottawa Food Bank.
For those who want to contribute, but aren't up for the whole week, this year there will be second offering - a Healthy Holiday Treats recipe book.

YOU NEED TO PRIORITIZE SLEEP!

There I said it.

Sleep is when you integrate memory and your brain detoxifies. Inadequate sleep is associated with inflammation, weight gain and mood disorders. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT SLEEP IS! (sorry for yelling)

🐑 Aim for 8 hours. Some people need more and some need less, but 8 is a good starting point.
📱Get your phone out of the bedroom - we have no self control around them.
🐑 Have a snack before bed. A handful of pumpkin seeds provides protein to stabilize blood sugar, and tryptophan (the sleepy amino acid).

Halloween! One of the days of the year that I let my kids (and myself) go more than a little crazy with junk food. It's good for the soul, as far as I'm concerned.
But, that doesn't mean that I drop good nutrition for rest of the day. In fact, I focus on it even more so that the sugar avalanche is less of a shock to the system. Here are some of my Halloween rules.
🎃 Super nutritious breakfast and lunch - lots of fruits and veggies.
🕷️ A balanced dinner before going out trick or treating - protein, grains and more veggies. Being hungry will definitely contribute to over indulging.
🎃 Bring water. Adequate hydration is linked to feeling full.
🕷️ Get the candy out of the house asap. My kids keep a certain number of treats, and we buy the rest from them. Then we donate what's left.

I'm also sharing a picture of the best Halloween costume that I ever made. It was years ago, when my son was obsessed with the solar system. Though I've made many others since then, I still consider this my pièce de résistance. And for those asking about the extra planets, he was particularly obsessed with dwarf planets.

I'm such a big winter squash fan. Roasted, in soups, in scones - immune boosting, warming and so yummy.

I regularly recommend probiotics in practice - for so much more than post-antibiotic diarrhea, which is the only reason I've heard of medical doctors or pharmacists recommend it.

Just came across this systematic review (pooling information from a bunch of studies) about probiotic use and arthritis. The review concludes that probiotic supplementation improves symptoms and test results for EIGHT types of inflammatory arthritis, including gout, osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

I love pumpkin! But hate pumpkin spice (it's the nutmeg). High in beta carotene and other antioxidants that are great to support the immune system, are anti-cancer and protect eyesight. I'm planning a Thai pumpkin soup, but then I started to think about pumpkin scones and now I'm torn.
