June is Scoliosis Awareness Month!
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine of over 10 degrees and is sometimes accompanied by an abnormal rotation. Between 2-4% of children and teens are diagnosed with scoliosis, and up to 30% of older adults will develop it as they age. Scoliosis affects 8-10 times as many girls as boys. Schools in Canada stopped screening for scoliosis in the early 1980's so many cases are caught late where surgery becomes the only option. Early detection allows for more non-surgical treatment options such as bracing and scoliosis specific physiotherapy in mild and moderate cases.

Our Scoliosis Awareness silent auction still has one week left before bidding closes on our amazing items. One of these is a voucher for a one-week kids' musical theatre summer camp with ASNY Productions. Sneha has a particular interest in managing Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions. Her treatment philosophy is centered around effective patient-therapist collaboration to determine her patients’ goals, provision of individualized treatment programs and patient education. She is driven to help her patients master self-management of their conditions and afford them the ability to participate in the activities they love.Women’s Health and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
1 in 3 women are affected by Pelvic floor dysfunction every year. Pelvic Health physiotherapists specialize in treating pelvic conditions.
• Urinary incontinence
• Overactive bladder (frequent urination)
• Pelvic organ prolapse (bulge in pelvic area)
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic Health is a specialized branch of physical therapy that involves the internal and external assessment and treatment of dysfunction of the pelvic floor (comprises a group of muscles, nerve, and tissues at the base of pelvis) which support the pelvic organs including the bladder, uterus, and colon. Pelvic Physiotherapists use treatment plans includes manual therapy, stretching, exercise prescription, behavioral training, education etc.
What causes Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD)?
PFD can be linked to various things including diseases and disorders of the pelvic floor as well as hormonal changes. Other factors that increase risk of PFD include pregnancy and childbirth, aging, trauma, and involvement in very high impact sports.
What to expect during a Pelvic Health Physiotherapy appointment?
Initial Assessment: Your Physiotherapist welcomes you into a private room where a medical history is taken.
A physical assessment is performed which involves assessing your posture, flexibility/strength of muscle around the abdomen, low back, hips, and pelvis. With consent, an external and internal examination may be done to assess the pelvic floor muscles. Other tests may be done as needed.
The gathered information is used to guide diagnosis and treatment plan.
Follow up sessions: Individualized Treatment plan is focused on treating symptoms and the root cause of the problem. Treatment helps you and your Physiotherapist to work towards a common goal of being symptom-free, through education, manual therapy, exercise, and prescription.
These sessions are important to help track patient improvement and recovery as well as address any concerns that you may have. You have full control and can withdraw consent at any point in the session.
