Dr. Alan Drummond challenges a recent Globe and Mail article (“Too many Canadians are leaving ERs before getting assessed”) that suggests expanding urgent care is the solution to long ER wait times.

A longtime emergency physician and health system advocate, Dr. Drummond argues that the real issue is hospital overcrowding, not a lack of alternatives. Patients are being “boarded” in ERs for hours or even days because of a shortage of available ward beds. This blocks access for new patients and overwhelms emergency staff.

The emergency room crisis isn’t about where patients enter the system — it’s about the system’s failure to move them through it.

Why opening more Urgent Care Centres doesn’t fix ER wait time👇

They sound like a smart solution to divert “non-emergency” visits—but the evidence and experience say otherwise.

🚪Capacity & staffing are limited.
Most UCCs don’t have the tools, other specialists, or staff to handle complex cases—and they’re not open 24/7.
If not positioned properly, they can even pull staff away from emergency departments, worsening shortages.

🏥 They don’t fix the REAL problem: hospital flow.
Crowding happens when admitted patients can’t leave the ED because hospital beds are full.
When our beds are full, we have nowhere to see new patients—and that’s when wait times spiral.

⚙️ Crowding is a system issue.
Too few staffed beds.
Too few nurses & specialists.
Delays in imaging & labs.
Lack of home & long-term care.
UCCs don’t fix these bottlenecks—and may even strain the workforce further.

Emergency teams can handle busy.
It’s crowding that kills.
Fix patient flow.
Staff hospitals properly.
Support care across the system.
Not more doors—better pathways.

For , we’re spotlighting Geriatric Emergency Medicine.

With more older adults in the ED, it's time to strengthen how we care for them — starting with the right training.

Experts like Dr. Priyank Bhatnagar (Emergency Physician and GeriEM Specialist, North York General Hospital) and Dr. Zahra Goodarzi (Division Head of Geriatric Medicine, University of Calgary,) have shared insights on assessing frailty and preventing falls in emergency settings.

Based on current scientific evidence, there is no established link between acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy and autism.

CAEP confirms that acetaminophen remains a safe and recommended option for managing pain and fever during pregnancy when used as directed.

🔍 What the evidence shows:
* No causal relationship has been found
* Health Canada (Healthy Canadians), The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada - SOGC , and international health organizations continue to endorse its use
* Observational studies suggesting harm have serious limitations and do not prove causation

⚠️ The real risk? Untreated fever - linked to miscarriage, neural tube defects, and preterm labor.

💬 Our advice: Talk to your healthcare provider. Avoiding safe, evidence-based treatments due to misinformation may put both parent and baby at risk.
