Things I’d Never Do as an Optometrist During the Holidays 👀✨

Holiday chaos shouldn’t mean cutting corners on eye health. These common habits seem harmless, but they can lead to irritation, infection, or long-term damage.

Here’s what not to do this season (and why):
• Soak contacts in tap water — it contains microorganisms that can cling to lenses and cause serious infections.
• Sleep in contacts after holiday parties — overnight wear increases the risk of corneal ulcers.
• Stretch your contact lens schedule — overworn lenses reduce oxygen to the eye and raise infection risk.
• Ignore winter dry eye — cold weather + indoor heating can trigger inflammation if untreated.
• Skip your yearly exam — most benefits expire Dec 31, and routine exams detect issues before symptoms show.
• Grab gas-station readers — one-size-fits-all lenses often cause headaches and eye strain due to poor alignment.
