Spill a drink, face the sword
What happens when you spill a fellow Warrior's drink? Why trial by sword and shield of course. A big thank you to the charming Skippy (Kevin) for being such an incredible sport for his matchup with Beth. :)

Social Distancing
IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - We at the Academy wanted to educate people on Proper Social Distancing for Covid-19. @William and Andrew demonstrate the recommended 6 foot distance from each other (or at least a space of a bullwhip). :) As well, the bullwhip is a GREAT way to encourage compliance. :) Be safe and smile during this trying time.

Beth Sturdevant vs multiple junior warriors
Junior Warriors tonight was joined by WOTL Founder/Shieldmaiden Instructor, Beth Sturdevant, as she bravely took on 4 of the junior warriors in a multiple opponent “sparring” match ⚔️
Cutting and footwork drilling
(From Martial Blade Concepts:) With a mixed skill class, we worked some fundamental CBC to drive home "earning your draw". We still had time to do some basic MBC cut-and-footwork drilling. If you're not careful, this turns into exercise.

Meanwhile in Teen Warrior Training...
Tonight’s class included learning how to break free from ground attacks, channelling unrecognized anger and releasing it while throwing axes, learning to throw & catch spears, followed by a powerful discussion about the effects other people’s expectations of who or how we should or should not be, warps our own perspective and makes us feel that no matter what we do...we will never be enough. The class ended with a short meditation aimed at helping each teen warrior feel “good enough” and accept themselves as they are today, and every day.

Mixed Weapon Arts - Sunday Sparring Sessions
Like to spar? Want to test your mettle against your fellow warrior? Then come out Sunday at 12:30 at the Warriors of the Light Academy to our FREE monthly Mixed Weapon Arts sparring session that is being hosted by one of our personable instructors, Andrew. It is a gathering focused on skill building, challenging yourself, while having fun. We provide the swords, shields and some helmets, you are encouraged to bring your own protection as well as any "safe" weapons you want to test yourself with. And do you want to know the best part? To encourage participation and community, this will be a FREE sparring session for the first couple of months.
Rotating around the Shield
This was an experiment during point-driven sparring last class: once an attack has been blocked by the Shield, try to rotate around that point of contact and find an entry point for the Sword. This is not always successful, but was intended solely to train reacting "on the fly".
Sword & Shield: Cut and Thrust Drills into Sparring
With Sword and Shield, we always focus on fundamental drills: this builds skill and conditioning. We then try to apply the same lessons from the drills in point-directed sparring. The goal is not who can hit the hardest, but if you can apply the lessons effectively.

Focused Impact- Using Small, Handheld Force Multipliers
(From MBC class on Monday nights) Based on a question about Kubotans, we started training in the MBC sub-system, "Focused Impact". This method uses familiar unarmed tactics with small force multipliers such as pens and flashlights.
In this video, Marie demonstrates how she adapts basic strikes to pass an attacker's swing, and then apply an application.
Martial Blade Concepts Ottawa: Stick Training & Body Mechanics
(published as MBC Ottawa, at Warriors of the Light) This was taken outside our regular class, but it was a good opportunity to work a particular single stick drill and focus on body mechanics. We picked apart: whole-body movement; chamber positions; and striking arm extension and recovery. We used the BOB dummy to develop accuracy and power, and a partnered stick drill to test structure and grip retention.
