✨20 years✨

It has been 20 years since my first college hockey season?! How is that possible??

During the 2003-2004 season we were an Independent team trying to prove we could play in the Division I. That year we proved we could compete and we joined the ECAC league the following season. I have so much pride in this program, knowing all we went through and seeing what this program has gone on to achieve - 3 National Championships, alumni (and current players) representing their countries in the World Championships and Olympic Games. Now we have 10 alumni playing in the PWHL. Incredible.

I should have known that attending the home opener of would reignite my love of the game. The minute the intros began I returned to that 12 year old girl that was so in love with the sport. I’m so thankful for this league. I’m so proud of these women constantly breaking records and showing everyone why our sport is amazing.

Let’s Go Ottawa!! Big game today to get into the playoffs 🙌🙌

May is Physiotherapy Month and I thought it was a good time to do another intro post!

I'm Emma, a Physiotherapist working out of Movement Union in Vanier, Ontario. Throughout the month I will be upping my IG game to provide you with some more information about me, my philosophy and some of my favourite exercises I use with my clients.

I'm on a mission to help restore your confidence and empower you to reclaim your active lifestyle.

I am a strength-focused physio who loves being able to get my clients off the treatment table and into the gym. So often our symptoms are related to doing too much too soon, when the demands outweigh our current capacity. We can work on building up that capacity level to meet the demands of the activities you enjoy doing!

Whether it's hitting the trails, playing your favourite sport or just enjoying your daily activities symptom-free, together we can make it happen! I want to be your teammate on your road to recovery, to help restore your confidence and empower you to achieve your goals!

Reach out if you have been struggling with ongoing symptoms and looking for some guidance on how to get back to the activities you love!

It's World Mental Health Day and we want to draw attention to maternal mental health.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why Sleep Matters For Maternal Mental Health:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Studies have shown that sleep (or the lack of it) plays a role in postpartum depression (PPD). Did you know that one of the most common symptoms of PPD is insomnia? Many women begin to accumulate a sleep debt in their second or third trimester of pregnancy, meaning they go into motherhood already exhausted. Studies show us that sleep support for insomnia during pregnancy helps reduce the severity of PPD symptoms at 2 and 6 weeks after delivery and that there is a direct correlation between maternal sleep quality (not quantity) and severity of PPD symptoms.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not getting quality sleep time increases both your risk of getting PPD and the severity of the symptoms if you do get it. While increasing sleep quality (and quantity) is not a magic ‘cure-all’ for PPD, it can help ease the symptoms, so postpartum sleep support for better quality sleep should be the goal of every new mom.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have been taking steps to get the sleep you need and still feeling like a , then get help. Talk to your doctor and / or a sleep professional to find a solution that leaves you feeling at least reasonably well rested.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

10 things I have learned so far.

As a Physiotherapist I committed to being a lifelong learner. Our philosophies, theories and treatments evolve as the evidence changes.

Over my 10 years as a practicing Physio I have already learned so much from the evidence and my clinical experience.

What have you learned? Did any of these surprise you?

Resharing an old post because it's an important reminder each year!

It's that time of year when the weather gets nice and we want to get outside to clean up our yards and work on our gardens.

I want to remind you that gardening is a physical activity. Gardening and yardwork are repetitive tasks including lifting, pulling, carrying, bending and more.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you get back into gardening.
