Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and mental health is part of the solution. Substance use disorders are treatable, and no one should be seen as any less of a person for living with one. Together, we can create an environment of support, helping those get the assistance they may need. Tell Ottawa to Pass Bill C-5!

UA Brothers and Sisters,

We’ve been advocating for years for regulatory efficiency to ensure major projects get built faster and UA members get on the job sooner.

Bill C-5, An Act to enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act, will do exactly that.

The proposed legislation will:

• Create a major projects office, and a list of nation-building projects that will be designated for expedited regulatory approval within 2 years.

• Create a ‘one project, one review’ process that will see all government environmental and regulatory approvals coordinated efficiently.

• Create a framework for Indigenous consultation as an upfront part of the approval process.
This is the kind of game-changing legislation that we’ve been advocating for, and it’s crucial for us to mobilize to ensure Ottawa gets this bill passed this summer.

Building major nation-building projects is what UA members do. From the Gordie Howe Bridge in Ontario to the Site-C Dam in B.C., to the pipelines, power plants and transmission grids, roads, and bridges coast to coast, we get the job done safely and skillfully.

Now is the time for us to use our collective voice as one union, and let newly elected MPs know that major projects are our priority.

Go to the link below to send a letter to your local MP and let them know that they need to get this legislation passed before parliament rises for the summer.

https://www.buildingtrades.ca/en/campaign-c5/

When we’ve come together to mobilize in the past, our voice has helped us secure major wins like the Labour Mobility Tax Deduction, the labour conditions attached to the Investment Tax Credits, anti-scab legislation, and the Tradesperson Tool Deduction. With your help, we can put another win on the board, and get started on the projects that Canada needs to secure its economic success and energy independence.

In Solidarity,

Terry Snooks
UA Director of Canadian Affairs

This spring, the UA Canada Soaring Skills program brought together 18 Indigenous students for an unforgettable experience at the Skills Competence Canada National Competition in Regina, Saskatchewan. Eight students from Onion Lake Cree Nation, a rural community about six hours north of Regina, and ten students from three remote communities in Nunavut, Igloolik, Pangnirtung and Arviat joined the adventure—some traveling two full days to get there!

For many of the Nunavut students, it was a trip of firsts: the first time flying, the first time leaving their community, and for some, even the first-time seeing trees, since some of their communities are situated north of the tree line. All of the students, whether from the North or the Prairies, shared in the excitement of discovery, connection, and new opportunity.

They stayed at the University of Regina, where they experienced what it would be like to live in a dorm, explored career pathways at the Skills Canada event with high-energy, hands-on showcase of skilled trades and technologies, filled with excitement, inspiration, and non-stop action. Highlights included a pizza party for all the students, an elders’ teaching circle, and a hands-on workshop building water filtration systems. At the Skills Canada event, students participated in a seek-and-find challenge while trying out trades from welding to plumbing to aesthetics and jobsite safety.

Some of the group even attended a Saskatchewan Roughriders football game, bringing loud cheers and big smiles all around! By the end of the week, students were energized and inspired—many saying they hope to return next year as competitors.

This life-changing experience was made possible thanks to the support of UA Canada, the Honda Canada Foundation, Skills Nunavut, and Skills Competence Canada, who continue to help youth from all corners of the country reach new heights and inspire youth to consider a life changing career in the skilled trades and technologies!
