Emily Hagerman, Registered Psychotherapist - Qualifying I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario

Anxiety, depression, and relationship issues can sometimes feel insurmountable. I am here to give you hope that we can work together through these issues and move toward healthier functioning. I believe everyone is made up of different parts, and while none of those parts are bad, I want to help you attend to your internal experience which will lead you to self-validation, understanding, and self-

acceptance. I understand how difficult it can be to express your feelings, deal with anxiety and depression on your own, and admit that you need assistance, and I want to commend you for taking the brave first step of seeking out help. My commitment is to work with you non-judgmentally and with an open mind to help you fully express yourself with vulnerability in a way that honours your unique story. I will approach you with unconditional positive regard through a person-centered lens while integrating somatic, mindfulness, trauma-informed, cognitive, and other techniques into our work. We will work together to determine the approach that is best suited to your needs. I work with adults of all ages, diverse cultural backgrounds, and am accepting of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship orientations. I have an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, and I have completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University. I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and in addition am a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

SUSTAINABLE SELF-CARE PRACTICES (that work for me)

*Calm Music* When I sit down to journal, read, or catch up on notes/admin tasks, I play calming music. It helps me focus and is very soothing!

*Mood Tracking* Tracking my mood (almost) daily helps me maintain awareness of how I'm feeling at certain times of the month and connect my moods to external factors.

*Sleep Tracking* I use a Fitbit to track my sleep/wake times, but you can also manually track your sleep/wake times to become more aware of how your sleep routine may be affecting you.

*Daily Affirmations* Affirmations are often an easy way for me to set the tone for the day. I have affirmation cards, but there are lots of free apps/websites that offer daily affirmations!

*Journaling* I will often do a "brain dump" into my journal where I will just write all of the disjointed/ruminating thoughts (often related to my anxiety). It feels cathartic and prevents the thoughts from swirling in my head! Gratitude journaling centers me and reminds me life isn't all bad!

*Treat Yoself* Sometimes getting myself a little treat to break up the day nourishes my soul and motivates me to keep going!

*Connect with Nature* Getting outside and walking or just sitting on the balcony helps calm my anxiety.

*"Small bites" Reading* Committing to reading a few pages or a chapter of a book per day feels a LOT more doable for me than tackling a 300+ page book.

*Move your body* I do what feels good for me. If I don't enjoy it, I won't do it.

*Make it Appealing and EASY* If self-care practices feel too difficult or unattractive for me, I ain't doing them. I have curated a routine for myself that isn't difficult to do!

*BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF* Some days I don't do any of these things, and that's okay. Self-compassion is an important part of self-care, don't forget that!

As many therapists know, it's easy to get carried away with the work and lose track of mindful practices that can enhance your work and help you to prevent burnout. Here are some self-care practices I try to engage in as a therapist. Share yours in the comments below!

* I schedule 60 minutes for my sessions. 50 of those minutes are spent in-session with client, and I try to use the remaining 10 minutes to complete my case notes, or at least start them. I do not finish my day until I complete my case notes.
* I have a few fellow therapists who I regularly keep in contact with for personal and professional reasons!
* Supervision has been an invaluable tool for me to ensure I am on the right track with clients.
* It is really hard to be honest about your uncertainties in supervision, but I have done the most learning when leaning into that vulnerability!
* I have learned through experience that five clients in a day is a comfortable number for me, and I think I would feel overwhelmed right now if I saw more than five in a day.
* We as therapists dedicate so much time caring for others. It is important for us to take time that is completely dedicated to our own care, and personal therapy is a great space for that!
* MANAGEABLE is key when it comes to thinking about a self-care routine that works for you. This routine should include sleep practices, regular exercise, and proper nutrition. Caring for our bodies and minds allows us to show up for our clients with authenticity, and prevents burnout!

Such a beautiful quote that really wonderfully sums up how life changing therapy can be. Therapy is a powerful tool to form a better (or new) connection with yourself which in turn enables you to form strong(er) connections with your loved ones. Learning to relate to yourself and attune to your emotions and needs leaves space for vulnerability and strong communication. Self care is not selfish and in fact provides you with the capacity to attend to relationships more meaningfully. ✨♥️
