Project SEARCH is a one-year intensive program designed for students with an intellectual or developmental disability who have completed high school and are ready to transition into the workforce. By bridging the gap between the classroom and a career, this partnership provides students with the tools and confidence they need to thrive in a competitive work environment.

About the program:
Project SEARCH offers a hands-on experience where interns spend their entire school day at The Ottawa Hospital at the Civic Campus. This immersive program includes:

Daily learning: 1 hour of classroom instruction followed by 4.5 hours of internship rotations.

Professional mentorship: Training and support from OCDSB teachers, LiveWorkPlay skills trainers, and hospital staff.

Career growth: Three distinct 10-week placements designed to build marketable, transferable skills.

This program is open to students identified with an intellectual or developmental disability. To participate, students must be 18+ years old as of September 2026 (must not turn 21 before January 1, 2027).

In her article with the Canadian Tax Foundation, Krista Carr, CEO of Inclusion Canada, explains how current Disability Tax Credit rules can push people toward guardianship just to complete a tax form.

Some adults with intellectual disabilities need support to understand information and say what they want, but that does not mean someone else should decide for them.

Everyone has the right to make choices about their own life, and systems must recognize supported decision making instead of pushing people toward guardianship.

LiveWorkPlay

It all started back in 1995, a small organization with a big dream: help the Ottawa community and the world to welcome people with intellectual disabilities to live, work, and play as valued citizens. Now in 2018, we are directly involved in the lives of more than 150 individuals with intellectual disabilities, but we also work with more than 200 employers and community partners, many of whom help us champion the benefits of inclusion and provide practical support to making positive changes. Family members have always been critical to our success, and they remain not only the primary partner in the lives of supported individuals, but provide key pathways to individuals and organizations in the community to join us! More than 150 volunteers support an incredible community meet-ups initiative, where people with and without disabilities get together across Ottawa every Friday night to share in a show, a beer, skating on the canal, and more! Interested? There’s lots to learn here on our page but please do visit our full website http://liveworkplay.ca and if you are really into history, we even have a book “The Courage To Fail, The Will To Succeed” http://liveworkplay.ca/courage If you are an individual, a family member, or perhaps a diligent member of the social services community investigating placement options, please note that LiveWorkPlay is not a “program” or a landlord. We do not own properties, and we do not host congregated programs (like day programs or sheltered workshops). We help people find homes of their own in the community (such as a rental apartment) and to build the life they want to live in the community (like a job, friends, and recreation and other fun in the community to enjoy alongside other citizens). You can learn more here http://liveworkplay.ca/registration/ If you are interested in volunteering please see http://liveworkplay.ca/volunteers/ and if you are an employer looking for access to great workers see http://liveworkplay.ca/gotjobs/ Last but not least, donations are wonderful: http://liveworkplay.ca/to-donate/
