Aidan vandenBosch has big news to share about the growth and development of his employment at Kinaxis! We would like to thank Neil Butts, Director of Culinary Programs at Kinaxis, for providing additional details for this update.

The LiveWorkPlay employment team worked closely with Neil regarding the establishment of a part-time role on the Facilities team, involving stocking and restocking of kitchenettes, stock room organization, and related duties with the fitness area. LiveWorkPlay matched Aidan as a leading candidate for this position, and he was hired into this role in April of 2025. Aidan quickly excelled with his core duties, and was also swept up with the love of cooking shared by his colleagues. This led to Aidan taking on additional roles related to pop-up cooking events and employee appreciation days.

Now ten months into the job, based on Aidan's performance and demonstrated skillsets, Neil has identified additional opportunities for Aidan to expand his role which will now include computer-based duties such as invoice submissions, inventory counts, and ordering supplies. LiveWorkPlay is pleased to be collaborating in developing and implementing the training plan for this expanded job description.

This is your chance to share your experiences about the many types of exclusion and discrimination people with intellectual disabilities and autistic persons face when using Ottawa's public transit system. In the simplest terms, we know that OC Transpo has traditionally overlooked accessibility that is not directly related to physical disabilities and underserved other disability populations, so it is important to ensure that this issue is brought to the forefront of the new accessibility plan.

The OC Transpo Accessibility Plan is a requirement under the Federal Government’s Accessible Canada Act. It is a three-year plan that includes ways in which OC Transpo will work to reduce or eliminate barriers people with disabilities (ALL DISABILITIES!) face within our public transit programs, services and facilities over time.

OC Transpo has stated that they are committed to making continuous changes and to expanding the initiatives in the new plan as feedback is received, innovative practices emerge, or new standards are developed.

This plan will be developed and updated in consultation with the community of persons with disabilities.

To create the new 2026-2029 plan, staff in both the City's Corporate Accessibility Office and Transit Services will consult with the community of persons with disabilities in several ways:

- virtual (online) consultations (to register, https://engage.ottawa.ca/oc-transpo-accessibility-plan-consultations)

- in-person consultations (to register, https://engage.ottawa.ca/oc-transpo-accessibility-plan-consultations)

- an online survey (https://engage.ottawa.ca/oc-transpo-accessibility-plan-consultations)

- a community toolkit for those wishing to host a consultation without City staff present (to request a copy, please contact accessibilityoffice@ottawa.ca

LiveWorkPlay

It all started back in 1995, a small organization with a big dream: help the Ottawa community and the world to welcome people with intellectual disabilities to live, work, and play as valued citizens. Now in 2018, we are directly involved in the lives of more than 150 individuals with intellectual disabilities, but we also work with more than 200 employers and community partners, many of whom help us champion the benefits of inclusion and provide practical support to making positive changes. Family members have always been critical to our success, and they remain not only the primary partner in the lives of supported individuals, but provide key pathways to individuals and organizations in the community to join us! More than 150 volunteers support an incredible community meet-ups initiative, where people with and without disabilities get together across Ottawa every Friday night to share in a show, a beer, skating on the canal, and more! Interested? There’s lots to learn here on our page but please do visit our full website http://liveworkplay.ca and if you are really into history, we even have a book “The Courage To Fail, The Will To Succeed” http://liveworkplay.ca/courage If you are an individual, a family member, or perhaps a diligent member of the social services community investigating placement options, please note that LiveWorkPlay is not a “program” or a landlord. We do not own properties, and we do not host congregated programs (like day programs or sheltered workshops). We help people find homes of their own in the community (such as a rental apartment) and to build the life they want to live in the community (like a job, friends, and recreation and other fun in the community to enjoy alongside other citizens). You can learn more here http://liveworkplay.ca/registration/ If you are interested in volunteering please see http://liveworkplay.ca/volunteers/ and if you are an employer looking for access to great workers see http://liveworkplay.ca/gotjobs/ Last but not least, donations are wonderful: http://liveworkplay.ca/to-donate/
