Check out Joe’s walking progression!

Joe joined us in June 2020, 6 months after suffering an Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, looking to get back on his feet. Joe is one of the hardest working individuals you will ever meet and has put in countless hours on his road to recovery. Never one to complain, he has worked consistently over the last four years and steadily progressed to where he is now. His case is an excellent example of how incremental progress over time can lead to major improvements.

Early in his rehabilitation, Joe’s program focused heavily on developing strength and motor control in his lower extremities (stay tuned for a video about this!). Once his legs were strong enough to bear weight for a sustained period, we introduced the Bungee Mobility Trainer® into his program and began the journey you see here.

Watch the video to see how Joe’s dedication, perseverance, and consistency have led to amazing progress.

Kinesiology week kinesiologist spotlight: Eric Heiden, MSc R. Kin

Eric has been with NeuroGym for over 20 years. In addition to working as a therapist with NeuroGym, Eric completed a Master's Degree in Human Kinetics, taught courses in motor control, motor learning and development, and rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa. Eric is now the Chief Operating Officer and Co-Owner of the clinic.

One of Eric's many accomplishments during his tenure at NeuroGym has been the development and application of biofeedback for motor skill training. The NeuroGym Biofeedback Trainer, is a unique tool that improves control and coordination by enabling clients to use their body to play computer games. Eric's work on biofeedback training to improve balance reactions and prevent falls in older adults has been published in the journal Aging Clinical and Experimental Research. A small sample of the exercises used in this study are shown in the videos attached, demonstrating some of the many ways that the biofeedback can be used to improve function.

Kinesiology week kinesiologist spotlight: Stéphane Fournier, R. Kin

Stéphane has been with NeuroGym for 5 years. While completing his BSc in Human Kinetics at the university of Ottawa, Stéphane got his start at NeuroGym as a student volunteer in the NeuroGym Group Program. After graduating, he became a registered kinesiologist and joined NeuroGym as a full-time therapist.

Having been inspired by the participants and therapists involved in the group program, Stéphane is now starting the NeuroGym Parkinson's Group Class. This drop-in class runs three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) using various stations to focus on balance, mobility, strength and fine-motor control and is tailored to the unique needs of individuals with Parkinson's.

Visit the Parkinson's Group Class tab on our website to learn more and register for an initial assessment with a kinesiologist.

Happy National Kinesiology Week!

Kinesiologists, like our own Eric and Stéphane, apply exercise and movement science to improve, restore, and optimize human movement. By employing evidence-based approaches, they use movement as medicine to promote health and well-being. At NeuroGym our kinesiologists help people with neurological conditions such as MS, Stroke, and Parkinson's to move better and be more active both in the clinic and their everyday lives.

November is Fall Prevention Month to bring awareness to how we can all work to prevent falls. The three big steps are Move, Improve and Remove. Move is moving your body to build strength, balance and flexibility through regular physical activity.
At Neurogym our active approach and specialized equipment help our clients challenge their balance safely and build strength and confidence. One piece of equipment that we use often is the Bungee Mobility Trainer which allows supported mobility to help build confidence as well as strength and endurance. We can also use the Biofeedback Trainer to turn balance training into an interactive game. Learn more facts about falls and fall prevention at www.fallpreventionmonth.ca and contact us to learn more about how we can help you.

Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!!

Today the OTTAWA sign is lit up blue for , part of , to acknowledge the important work of OTs around the world. In rehabilitation physiotherapists and occupational therapists often work side by side to improve client quality of life. OT focusses on changing the environment, activity or abilities of the person so that they can do the activities that are important to them. This can include mobility aid assessments under the Ontario Assistive Devices Program, building strength and mobility, and Functional Capacity Evaluations.

Earlier this year our kinesiologist Eric was in Camrose, Alberta to train rehab staff in the community about how to use our Bungee Mobility Trainer. The Camrose Booster spoke to Eric and the community members involved in making the equipment available to the community.
