🌱Proper breathing mechanics is one of the first things that we address in Pelvic Health Physiotherapy.

Your pelvic muscles should be relaxed when you inhale.

✖️When we breathe into our chest (more shallow), we tend to actually tighten our pelvic floor, instead of relaxing it.

⭐Practicing this one simple method can make a world of a difference in your pelvic health. This includes anything related to:

🤍 Bladder health (leakage, frequency, urgency)
🤍 Bowel health (constipation, hemorrhoids)
🤍 Core strength, low back, pelvis, and hips
🤍 Pelvic organ support
🤍 In*******se health and wellness
🤍 Prenatal/postnatal wellness

Unsure of how you should position yourself as your labour progresses? These principles help us make sense of the progressive movement needs throughout labour, prior to pushing.

The last position principles also apply to the pushing phase, as we want to optimize the opening of the bottom part of the pelvis!

DM or contact us with questions, we are here to help 🤍

🩷Cesarean birth rehab is crucial!

Despite being the most commonly performed surgery in Canada, with increasing rates every year, many women are unfamiliar with what happens during a c-section, how to prepare for it and how to recover optimally.

As Pelvic Health Physiotherapists, one of our specialties is preparing women for cesarean births, as well as participating in their recovery postpartum. If you have any questions, book a 15 minute phone consult, free of charge, to speak directly with one of our Pelvic Health Physiotherapists 🫶🏽

4 ways of reducing perineal tissue disruption during delivery:

1. Aim for controlled pushing during the 2nd stage of labour
Pushing the baby out gently and slowly allows time for your perineum to stretch

2. Keep your perineum warm
Keep a warm washcloth on the perineum during the pushing stage to warm the tissues so they give way for baby

3. Perform perineal massage during labour
Have your midwife or nurse perform a perineal massage during the pushing stage to relax the tissues to make way for baby

4. Try delivering in a side lying or gravity assisted position
Certain labour positions like side-lying and upright (supported kneeling) can reduce the likelihood of severe tearing

🩷Vaginal lubricants!

For people experiencing pain with in*******se, we recommend a good vaginal lubricants when engaging in in*******se.

Vaginal lubricants help by reducing friction into the vaginal tissues which can help reduce pain associated with pe*******on. There are a number of lubricants on the market but we generally recommend lubricants that are SILICONE BASED, WATER BASED OR ALOE BASED.

Everyone will have their own preference of what works for them; however, we do recommend staying clear of lubricants that may affect the vaginal flora. Here are the ingredients to stay clear of: PARABENS, GLYCERIN, PETROLEUM, FRAGRANCE, UNBALANCED PH.
