Each year after the Canada Day events, a thank you celebration is held for all the volunteers who make it a success. This year SJA FD (Ottawa) was presented with a certicate acknowledging our contributions to the day with medical support and first aid by our volunteers for 45 years! Today is International St. John’s Day!

We are proud to recognize the incredible dedication of over 15,000 SJA volunteers across Canada. Together, they contribute more than 1 million volunteer hours each year – delivering first aid services, emergency response, and leading impactful programs like our therapy dog program and youth initiatives. Our volunteers are the heart of what we do, and we thank them for their incredible service.

St John International is proud to welcome Dr Michel C. Doré as our new Sub-Prior.

A long-standing member of the Order and a leader in prehospital care, emergency management and public health, Dr Doré brings over 40 years of experience to this global role.

From his work as Chair of the Québec Council to his national leadership in Canada’s public health and emergency sectors, Dr Doré has exemplified dedication to service. He is also a professor, researcher and decorated volunteer — including over a decade with air search and rescue.

With deep compassion and unmatched expertise, Dr Doré will help guide the Order’s global mission of care and resilience in an ever-changing world. We look forward to the journey ahead under his capable leadership.

We will be posting more photos, but we had a wonderful morning at City Hall where the Mayor proclaimed today St. John Ambulance day in Ottawa! We are grateful to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, Councillor Steve Desroches, MPP George Darouze for joining us. The proclamation was hosted by our Board Chair, with representation of SJA FD by past and present Board members from our council and SJA Ontario Council, staff, First Aid Instructors, Community Services members and Therapy Dog teams as well as our Council Commissioner. Guests from OC Transpo Special Constables, Ottawa Fire Department, Ottawa Paramedic Services and others were also welcomed. Thank you all!

Today, service was held to mark the passing of Kathleen (Kathy) Eaton (DStJ) who spent many years as a dedicated volunteer and CS leader with SJA FD.
