We have all heard the term Deep Tissue Massage before, but what exactly is a Deep Tissue Massage and why is it beneficial?

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy uses deep pressure, which is beneficial in releasing acute and chronic muscle tension. It focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia.

Here are some of the benefits of Deep Tissue Massage:
👉 It can relieve chronic pain and tension from posture habits and inactivity while sitting at a desk, as well as from being active in sports or workouts.
👉 It targets not only the muscle but the scar tissue as well. It breaks down the adhesions and releases the fibres, allowing them to re-align with the direction of muscle fibres, restoring function.
👉 It can lower Cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and increase Serotonin, (well-being and happiness hormone) levels leaving you feeling relaxed and happy.
👉 It can provide a non-painful stimulus which can travel through your nervous system to your brain faster than painful stimulus can, thereby reducing the pain that your brain can feel.
👉 It can create improved circulation can have a positive effect on lymphatic drainage, which helps to reduce inflammation and water retention in the body, leading to increased body mobility and decreased pain.

Deep Tissue Massage has many benefits, and while it may cause some discomfort both during and after treatment, it can be very beneficial in the long term. In order to minimize any negative effects, we highly recommend that you communicate consistently with your therapist about how the pressure feels.

While it may seem like a small thing, a lacross ball/tennis ball might just become your new best friend.

Lacross balls are the perfect size to help relieve knots in your body. Back pain, hip tension and shoulder aching can all be relieved with a little ball trigger point release! The best part is that it is a way to get relief at home or on the road when you don't have access to Physiotherapy.

The back is one area that can be released with a ball. Here are our best tips for relieving back pain with a lacross ball:

👉 Since your back is relatively large, you may find it helpful to work one quadrant at a time.
👉 With the ball secured between your back and the wall, roll up and down, back and forth in small movements.
👉 When you find a trigger point, either hold it to release or keep that ball still while you raise your arm straight out on front of you.
👉 Lift and lower your arm a few times to help release the muscle over the ball.
👉 Continue working each quadrant of your back and shoulders.

Pro-tip! It can be hard to keep the ball between your back and the wall, try putting the ball in a pillow case or long sock and use that to help roll the ball up and down. It works wonders!

✨What is TMJ?✨

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint. It connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull at the temporal bone. This joint is located just in front of the ear on each side of the head and allows your jaw to move when you talk, chew, and yawn.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can cause pain in the jaw joint and surrounding areas, along with symptoms such as frequent headaches, teeth grinding or clenching, clicking or popping when opening and closing the mouth, ringing in the ears, and jaw tension or stiffness.

The good news is that many people experience relief quickly with the right TMJ treatment. Our team of experienced TMJ Physiotherapists and massage therapists can help reduce pain, restore movement, and improve function. Sara, Elizabeth, Zac, and Roxanne are here to support you through your recovery.

💡Pro tip: While waiting for your appointment, try to avoid chewing gum, biting your nails, or resting your chin on your hand, these habits can increase strain on the jaw.

We are back with another Term Tip Tuesday!

Today's word is a two parter! Bursa and Bursitis

👉 A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac located between a bone and a tendon or muscle that helps to reduce friction and provide cushioning during movement.

👉 Bursitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the bursa, which can cause pain, swelling, and limited range of motion.

Physiotherapy treatment for bursitis may include modalities such as ice or heat therapy, manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription, and education on proper joint mechanics and posture. Bursitis most commonly affects shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

🌸 Spring is officially here! We’re so happy to welcome brighter days and say goodbye to the cold.

As season's change, our squeaky clean indoor environment does not. As a friendly reminder, please continue to remove your outdoor shoes when you arrive. Our team works hard to keep the clinic clean, and this small step makes a big difference.

Complimentary slippers are available if you’d like to use them. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation! 😊

Have you met Zac yet?

Zac is the newest Physiotherapist to join the Inertia team! He’s been with us since August 2025 and brings 8 years of hands-on Physiotherapy experience to the clinic. His clinical interests include TMJ, headaches/migraines, neck and tinnitus. As a big sports fan, he also enjoys treating sports-related injuries.

Zac’s biggest piece of advice for patients?
“Where you feel pain isn’t always the source, it’s often a symptom coming from somewhere else.”

He loves problem-solving, getting to the root cause of pain, and helping patients move and feel better long term.

Outside of the clinic, Zac can be found spending time with his fiancée and their dog, Riley. He enjoys travelling, playing video games, and watching sports. Ask him about a game and chances are, he watched it!

With 6 years of education at the University of Ottawa and years of real-world experience, Zac is a wonderful addition to the Inertia Physio+ team.

Did you know that spring is one of the busiest seasons for tournaments, sports, and school for our kids?

Many seasonal sports overlap during the March and April months, which means kids are often balancing multiple practices, games, and competitions at the same time. With such busy schedules, it’s important to make sure they’re also taking proper care of their bodies.

High-intensity sports place added stress on growing muscles and joints, even at a young age. Without enough recovery, strength, and movement support, this can increase the risk of overuse injuries, pain, and burnout.

Physiotherapy helps support growing bodies by improving strength, flexibility, coordination, and movement patterns, allowing kids to stay active, recover properly, and continue doing what they love safely and confidently.

Our clinic is for all ages! Taking care of the body early sets the foundation for a lifetime of movement 💛

Have you heard of Gua Sha? ✨

Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It’s a natural, non-invasive treatment that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently glide over the skin along the body’s meridian lines.

This technique helps to release stagnated energy, reduce pain and inflammation, improve circulation, and support overall well-being.

In our clinic, we use specialized Gua Sha tools, such as jade and bian stone, to enhance the effectiveness of each treatment while keeping it gentle and comfortable.

Our TCM practitioner Lei works closely with every client to create a personalized treatment plan based on their unique needs. All treatments are provided with attentive care in a private, relaxing space to ensure you feel comfortable throughout your visit.

In need of a reset this spring? Try Gua Sha!
