How are we all feeling after turning the clocks back yesterday? Earlier sunsets can impact your mood and your eating patterns. Tuning into how you're feeling as we transition through the Fall season is a great way to give yourself the support you need—therapy, medication, movement—before you feel burnt out or depressed.

Do you feel like Halloween candy has been around for weeks? If you’re already bored of having it so readily available, this is a great way to remind yourself that those very tasty foods do lose their appeal with repeated exposure! Giving yourself permission to eat what, when, and how much you want won’t have you eating only ice cream and chips.

Your inner critic might sound a lot like a horrible boss: “Do more!” “Work harder!”?

This internal bully often tells us we’re not good enough and you might find food feels like the only way to drown the voice out!

Try this instead: notice what your inner critic is saying and pause. In this space you get to decide if that voice will guide you or if you’ll rebel and be a little kinder to yourself.

Find that place of power to choose for yourself!

What have you done lately that was fun? Made you feel playful? Lit you up with joy?

Don’t forget to create moments that feel good! Pouring into your own cup can make you feel more resilient in your daily life (and it doesn’t have to take up a lot of time!).

As temperatures start to dip, you might start the process of switching from your Summer to Fall wardrobe. This can sometimes feel stressful if clothing doesn’t fit as you’d want it to or “like it did last year.”

Be gentle with yourself as you sift through your closet and remember that the clothes should change to fit you, not the other way around (no need for a restrictive diet)!

If you need to buy some new clothes try shopping sales, checking out thrift stores, see what can be altered, or do clothing swap with friends.

Read how you can use grounding techniques to feel calmer (making you emotionally eat less frequently). Try one of the effective strategies:

Emotional eaters use food as a way to escape their body, to avoid experiencing certain feelings. Learn five effective ways to ground yourself. This can help lessen the intensity of the emotions that lead you to use food to cope and even help you emotionally eat less frequently.

Buying my own motorcycle was a powerful way for me to invest in my dreams and personal joy!

It is super powerful to show up for yourself and give yourself what you need—big or small (it doesn’t have to be a motorcycle 😄).

Consider how you want to feel: Calm? Energized? Connected? Then think about how you can achieve that feeling for yourself, there is no wrong answer!

And the most important part? Decide to take action and do the next step, whatever that is!

Yes, emotional eating helps distract you from what you don’t want to feel, but there are other reasons you might be reaching for food:

➡️ It gives you pleasure. If you’re constantly meeting the needs of others and never your own, food might be the only thing in your life that feels good.

➡️ The habit feels like control. Life can be overwhelming and in the face of uncertainty you’re craving stability, predictability, and food gives you that.

Getting to the root cause of why you emotionally eat is a powerful first step to breaking the cycle.

Eating because you’re feeling lonely is a common emotional trigger. I often remind clients that it doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert, we all need connection!

The trick is to find out what works for you: is a group text a great, low-pressure outlet? Or maybe a workout class where you’re around people but don’t need to make conversation is more your speed?

Whatever it is, these strategies can help ease up feelings of loneliness that trigger emotional eating habits.

It’s cozy food weekend: mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, pies, oh my!

If Thanksgiving stresses you out, know that that is completely normal. Emotions can be running high with family stress and the availability of food makes it doubly challenging for emotional eaters.

Try this: eat what you’re really craving, without beating yourself up, and then move on to your next meal.

It is easy to put moving your body at the bottom of your to do list—it’s a “nice to have” when you’ve got other things to do…and maybe an avoidance tactic if you’ve got a challenging relationship with movement (hello diet culture training!).

In my latest blog post, I am sharing the common ways clients have shifted their relationship with movement. I hope it inspires you! Movement shouldn’t feel like a punishment:

Diet culture has women hating exercise by prescribing long, gruelling, and painful workouts. Forget those rules! Read how you can bring back play and joy to how you move your body by taking into account your preferences, abilities, and time availability.
