Working on yourself can be an intimidating process—it means slowing down, tuning in, and being honest. All things you might have been avoiding (and using food to do so).

Instead of approaching this as a challenge to change, see if you can reframe to come from a place of curiosity. For example:

“I have to stop emotional eating right now. I’m gaining so much weight!”

Versus:

“What is making me reach for food right now? What would happen if I waited 5 minutes?”

You might be seeing a lot of social media posts about putting yourself on your to do list to make sure you show yourself some support. Here are some concrete ways to do that:
Do some deep breathing.
Eat food that satisfies you.
Cry if you need to.
Find some quiet time.
Move your body.
Unwind with a book or favourite show.
Scream your anger alone in your care.

Showing yourself some care will go a long way to making you feel more fulfilled and less likely to emotionally eat to meet that need.

You might have heard about giving yourself unconditional permission to eat. But what does that really mean? And how can you start doing it?

We’re breaking it down in an easy-to-understand blog post! Read the full thing here:

Trying to stick to strict diet rules is keeping you stuck in the binge-restrict-binge cycle. Break free by learning how to give yourself unconditional permission to eat what you want, when you want, in whatever amount. We promise you won't only eat ice cream!

What food rules do you stick to? Don’t eat carbs, don’t eat after 7:00 p.m., salad is good/fries are bad, never have butter or sugar…The list goes on!

Get curious: where did these rules come from? It might be more than one influence like a diet book, your parent’s, or social media.

Consider if these rules are working for you. If they are setting you up to binge (because you’re not meeting your own needs or feeling satisfied), it’s time to tune in and start setting your own rules!

It is easy to get caught up in the negative: our brains work hard to keep us safe, not necessarily happy. This means we’re more likely to worry than be optimistic.

Shift your focus! Try this 👇🏻

When you have a good moment, or day, or week make a conscious effort to notice it. You can write it down or even say it out loud to yourself or a friend.

Sometimes this can feel unsafe, like you’re jinxing a good experience. But consciously focussing on the positive can start to help you feel more relaxed with life (and its ups and downs)!

A gentle reminder than you don’t have to do it all.

In fact, saying “no” and protecting your energy is a key way to make sure resentment doesn’t build with those in your life. All those things unsaid can lead you to emotionally eat as a way of finding some release or control.

Getting clear on what you will and won’t do can not only free up mental space (and time!), but also have you reaching for food less often.

Are you someone who has your phone out while you snack? Or maybe you need to put on the TV when eating dinner?

These distractions can keep you from simply relaxing with your food. Plus, they can also keep you from tuning into your hunger and fullness cues (meaning you’re more likely to overeat).

You don’t have to eat without a screen for every meal (it is about curiosity, not perfection), but try one and see how you feel. Do you enjoy your food more? Are you more aware of feeling full?
