Its Toolbox Tuesday! No matter the endured trauma, we learn through therapy the concept of window of tolerance. It is within that moment where we carry awareness, understand our emotions, culpability of how we respond , cultivate healing through these moments and able to do the things we may need to do within that space. Window of tolerance allows space within your safe parameters. When Outside of your window of tolerance, be gentle with yourself, give yourself a break, a breath, and be okay with not being okay.

Today we are sharing a diagram of what healing can look like. As the saying goes, healing isn’t linear and sometimes messy, yet, don’t give up. The healing process can feel scary, even debilitating, however when you carry the awareness of what happened to you, you become responsible to your own healing journey. That’s in your control, not the trauma itself. Healing is intentional.

It’s Toolbox Tuesday Talks!

Grief and Recovery? How do these words align?

Part of trauma recovery requires us to self-forgive and let go of who we were.

When trauma is endured we often hear psychotherapists say “ trauma changes you”.

And when we hear that, our hope of what once was , may not be attainable, as the truth is we are more aware than during a traumatic situation.

Grieving of our past self is a natural response.

Grieving is a natural response to what we hoped we would become “ourselves “ again when we seek therapy.

However, grieving let’s go of the shame, the guilt , the not knowing we held onto ourselves for too long.

It allows us to open a door to being gentle with ourselves .

You’re allowed to grieve for your old self. It’s okay!

A gentle reminder that as you navigate your journey of healing by sharing your experiences and receiving responses, it is crucial to remember that the opinions of others are not your responsibility to internalize. When others express discomfort with your recovery process, it may be an indication that they felt comfortable while you were grappling with your trauma, as it enabled them to continue their own narratives onto you. Vulnerability does not imply being exploited, abused, manipulated, or coerced. Your humanity remains intact, and your fundamental human rights are still valid.

We believe that every emotion is valid and we often share that healing can be very messy. However, before the healing process to begin, we must emotionally regulate our feelings and emotions in order to go through healing. If we don’t, our emotions will constantly be at freeze and fawn mode. Therefore, acknowledge your emotions. Acknowledge you’re unsure how to feel. Acknowledge you’re terrified. Speaking about what we’ve hidden for so long just to survive is okay. Once you land in a safe space, you have the right to feel one feeling at a time.

People pleasing is a form of trauma response .

In mental health terms, we call it “fawning” .

Fawning is the last form of trauma response when we have already shown signs of fright, flight and freeze.

Fawn is a response where many seek to abide by other’s wishes, demands and needs in order to seek validation.

Fawn is an automatic response to appease an abuser, a bully, a toxic person in order for them not to hurt us again.

So not knowing this, it’s okay.

Self-forgiveness shares an awareness, not shame or guilt.

So please be gentle with yourself.
