Yes 🙌🙌🙌

Pessaries can be a game changer for limiting leaks with activity while we work to get you stronger.

Uresta is a great option whether for short or long term use.

A professionally fitted pessary is also an option if you have tried Uresta (or Impressa - a tampon like pessary) and didn’t find it helped enough or you are sick of inserting and removing it.

Stay tuned for an official announcement but I am excited to share that I will be starting to offer pessary fittings this spring! I’ve got a short waitlist started already so if you want more info or have already been recommended to have a pessary fittings, please reach out!

Time for a shift! Let’s expand our language, and start discussing pelvic health, not pelvic floors. A focus on a muscle group, well, keeps the conversation on the muscle group. This limits how folks interpret needs that involve the pelvic floor - incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse, pain with s*x. The pelvic floor is seen as both the only source, and the solution to the these needs. A shift in language fosters a shift in thought. Understanding the range of both direct and indirect factors that play into these issues, broadens both our investigation of other contributing considerations AND our options to intervene. We can consider

* pressure systems
* muscular interrelationships
* exercise habits
* lack of exercise
* social supports and influences
* sleep
* stress
* And more

When we shift these are no longer only a pelvic floor issue: isolated. It is a whole person issue with a broader approach and understanding: integrated.

Worried about diastasis or heard that certain exercises can be dangerous?

Antony Lo, an Australian physio I’m a huge fan of, shared a fantastic analogy in his post below.

Bodies are quite resilient. Diastasis is how your body creates space for baby to grow during pregnancy - it’s an amazing mechanism rather than a condition to be feared.

Why do some women have more severe or long lasting diastasis post partum? We aren’t really sure why to be completely honest. One thing we do know is that scaring women with unfounded claims of exercises potentially making things worse is incredibly unhelpful. It took your body 9-10 months of growing a human being to “cause” your diastasis. An exercise you perform for a minute or two, a few times a week isn’t going to have the same kind of impact. 😉

If you’ve recently (or not so recently!) given birth and are wondering where to start with core exercises, reach out to a pelvic health physio. If you’re local to the east Ottawa area, send me a message or book a consultation to see what your next best steps are.
