An estimated 1% of all babies are born with congenital heart disease (CHD). It is the world’s number one birth defect but now there is hope.

Thanks to the work of University of Ottawa Heart Institute specialists on the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) team, young adults with CHD have the chance to grow up, build careers, and start families.

This terrifying moment marked the beginning of Gabriella’s journey with congenital heart disease (CHD). After four open-heart surgeries, she is now a thriving 26-year-old, thanks to the lifelong care she receives from the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Team at the Heart Institute.

Her most recent valve replacement was performed by Dr. Maharajh, a cardiac surgeon on the ACHD team. Now one of over 2,000 adults that this specialized team cares, Gabriella says, "They keep me safe, healthy, and able to live a great life, despite my condition."

As recently as the 1960s, only 20% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) lived to see adulthood. Today, thanks to breakthroughs, like those happening at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, many more of these patients have a 90% chance of living a full life.

Thanks to innovative advancements, the Heart Institute is caring for a new generation of adult patients who require specialized, lifelong care. Dr. Markus Schwerzmann and the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Team at the Heart Institute are leading the way, providing this vital support.

Patients receive the best care when everyone across the healthcare network works together to put that person first. In our recent Foundation Connection magazine we made a statement that overlooked the expertise and dedication of family physicians. It was wrong to convey the problem in that way. You are often the first contact for patients – the frontline – and you carry an enormous load in our healthcare system, providing exceptional care under incredibly demanding circumstances.

The article should have offered a more balanced view – one that recognized the complexity and pressures you face every day.

We’re all working toward the same goal: better outcomes for patients. That means stronger collaboration across the health network, including with primary care, and we look forward to strengthening those relationships to deliver the care patients deserve.
