❤️ Why I Run for Heart | Meet Gooney's

Two years ago, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute gave Luis Granati's family a second chance. In December 2023, Luis, the owner of Gooney's restaurant, had a heart attack. The Heart Institute's team took care of him, and his family is forever grateful.

Recovery brought new habits, more movement, and a love for running. Now Luis is preparing to run a 5K at alongside his family, friends, and the Ottawa community.

To give back, Gooney's has partnered with the Heart Institute Foundation to raise funds for innovative patient-care and research. They are selling running shirts, collecting donations in-store and online, and opening up on race weekend to nourish and cheer on the runners.

« Mes collègues me motivent et m’inspirent.

❤ Twenty-eight years. Thousands of patients. One calling.

Meet Beroly Mathew, celebrating a 28-year nursing career at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Ottawa Heart Institute.

When she was just 25 years old, Beroly left her home of Kerala, a southern province of India, with her husband, a bachelor’s degree in nursing and dreams of a life in Ottawa. “I arrived in Canada from India in 1995 and was excited to see the snow for the first time.”

Now a Care Facilitator on H5 Cardiology, Beroly manages a unit with 32 beds that cares for patients admitted for medical heart disease, heart attack, diagnostic procedures or a heart transplant.
“My co-workers motivate and inspire me. Every single day I see them work above and beyond to provide the best possible care for their patients. I am so proud to be part of an organization that prioritizes compassion, professionalism, and patient-centred care.”

💌When every second counts, University of Ottawa Heart Institute nurses are there.

Meet Mohamed Hussein Yusuf, a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Cardiology Unit (ICCU) at the Ottawa Heart Institute.

Mohamed was born in Somalia to a pediatrician and registered nurse. In 1999, his family moved to Ottawa through a refugee application. His personal history and the memory of his father’s health challenges eventually drew him toward a career where he could help others facing similar circumstances with both skill and deep compassion.

Now an ICCU nurse, Mohamed is a proud member of the Rapid Assessment of Critical Events (RACE) team, joining other intensive care experts, including an Intensive Care Unit doctor and respiratory therapist, in responding to in-hospital needs all over the hospital.

“You are getting the best care there is. You will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team, and you can trust them. Somebody is always there watching out for you, and this is one of the safest places to be when you’re sick.”

This Nursing Week, have your gift matched by the Grass Family Foundation. Support the nurses who make this care possible.

Why I Run for Heart | Meet Jasmine 🏃🏻‍♀️❤

Jasmine McKnight lost her dad to a heart attack in 2021. He was her best friend and biggest supporter. She started running Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend in his honour, raising funds in support of the Heart Institute along the way.

Unexpectedly in 2025, Jasmine became a Heart Institute patient herself. "I knew I wanted to raise awareness for heart health," she shares. "No one should ever feel like they are too young to take their health seriously."

This year, she's running the Ottawa Race Weekend for her dad, for the Heart Institute, and for herself.

💌 Behind every recovery is a nurse who helped make it possible.

Meet Melanie Matta, a registered nurse for 22 years who has built an evolving and satisfying 20-year career at the Ottawa Heart Institute. Working in the Division of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Prevention, Melanie and the team serve people who have had a recent heart event, hospital admission for a heart-related problem, or diagnosis of heart disease. The program provides the tools needed for people to successfully slow disease progression, reduce the risk of another cardiac event, and manage their own care long term.

As the recent recipient of the prestigious Heather Sherrard Nursing Research Award, Melanie and a team were able to develop a project to expand access to rehabilitation and improve the lives and independence of frail cardiac patients with medical complexities.

Nursing is a rewarding and challenging career where you can make change.

What a day 💛

The 4th Annual Ottawa Pickleball Classic raised $160,080 for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and none of it would have been possible without so many incredible people, especially our presenting partner CHG-MERIDIAN and the EY Centre for generously hosting us.

To our sponsors, partners, volunteers, participants, donors, decorators, entertainers, food and recovery teams, our Heart Institute Mobile Screening and One Million Canadian Hearts teams, and everyone who showed up and showed out for heart health, thank you.

And a special thank you to Motion By Mike for putting this video together 🎥

There are too many of you to name and we wouldn't have it any other way.🏓
