Hello friends! I am noticing that a lot of my posts aren’t reaching their typical audience for some reason on social media. If you’re interested in hearing about my classes, workshops, trainings, etc. Send me a message and I will add you to my newsletter. This is the best way to be sure you don’t miss out on any announcements and we can stay connected despite the fact that it’s becoming more challenging to do so over social media.

I was SO TIRED yesterday. The kind of tired where if you left me in a seated position for too long I would just pass right out.

All day I was saying to myself, “why am I so tired? I haven’t done anything?” It occurred to me that I clearly believe I need to earn feeling tired - like if it doesn’t seem justified it makes it less real.

The seasons are changing, the days are getting shorter, and in case you needed the reminder the way we care for ourselves changes depending on those factors.

So take the nap. Drink the tea. Leave the housework - it will be there in May ;)

I often think about how to make classes truly “all-levels” or what creates a more accessible sequence. One thing I’ve observed as a teacher is that there is no such thing as a universal resting pose.

For example, child’s pose. Generally, I could sleep here. Leave me here forever. That being said if it’s early in the practice or if I’m particularly tight that day sometimes my body screams in this pose.

I think as a teacher if we should have a repertoire of pose options, that can make every student feel like they’re benefiting and participating. It can be tempting to tell the students “if this doesn’t work in your body, do something that does” but then we haven’t really facilitated them feeling included in the class.

To continue w this child’s pose option this might be how I suggest modifications:

• tuck your toes under and place a block between your calves to elevate your hips in child’s pose

• Keep the block between your calves and come up into a kneeling position instead.

• Come onto your back and draw your knees to your chest mimicking this same shape reclined.

Of course our language of how we offer these options is SO important but that’s for another post!!

Are there poses in your body, or that you’ve observed in others, that might be assumed to be all-levels but leave students behind in our community classes? How do you modify them if so? Also feel free to ask me for suggestions on modifications!!

Confession.

I have not maintained a regular Yoga practice during Covid. I haven’t felt like practicing, I haven’t felt motivated or inspired.

A few weeks ago I started thinking about why that was, and how I could start to feel inspired again. I realized that part of it was just pure fatigue, but a huge part is that I draw inspiration from my Yoga community. From talking with students and teachers, from attending classes, from being in the studio and all of those things haven’t been part of my life.

So over the last week I have started to practice online again with my favourite teachers, and oh how I’ve missed my Yoga practice!

If you missed my newsletter which listed some of my favourite teachers (many of who have either free or sliding scale offerings) send me a DM and I can send it off to you.

Our practices are supposed to ebb and flow with the rest of our lives, but it’s beautiful when they start to come back.

What if you’re the person who causes the pain?
What if you’re the person who triggers someone?

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on social media lately that point the finger at others who have hurt us or wronged us. These posts might talk about recognizing our own trauma and understanding our history is not our fault.

But what if you’re the one at fault? What if you have caused the pain? What then?

I think often we can have this inner dialogue of, “but I’m a good person and I didn’t intentionally cause harm.” This statement might be true however it doesn’t alleviate us from the responsibility to recognize the pain we’ve caused, apologize, and do better.

I believe great healing could begin if we could all say, “I am so sorry I hurt you.”

It can often feel like the parts of yourself you’re praised for, are the same parts you’re criticized for.

I have had a number of occasions over the past few years where I’ve felt like I should compromise my beliefs to make those around me more comfortable or to avoid conflict.

I am learning to decipher those things I’m willing to loosen my approach, and I’m being braver about standing for the things that matter to me.

So if you’re out there standing your ground and you’re feeling tired or doubting yourself here’s a little reminder - you don’t have to change for anyone, and you also don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Your energy and efforts are sacred, so stand your ground but leave behind to people who refuse to respect you.

I tend to be an introspective person. The type of person who can think themselves into and out of happiness within a matter of moments.

During this pandemic I’ve had a lot of reflection time (usually during laundry folding and dish washing) and it’s been a growth and learning opportunity for sure.

At the same time I need to remind myself to have fun, and to laugh. The world is heavy but that doesn’t mean every moment of my day has to be heavy as well.

Some of the things that bring me joy are:
🤍 Playing in the splash pad with my tiny human.
🤍Doing FaceTime workouts with my family.
🤍Sunset walks with my pup.
🤍Celebrating the milestones and joyful moments of those around me.
🤍Icecream

How are you finding joy??

I made a really difficult decision this week.

Over the past few weeks there have been a number of conversations about studios reopening in the near future.

I had such conflicting feelings. Part of me was so excited to see everyone and be back in our community. At the same time I just could not shake this feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I decided that I needed to take some more time before returning. When I return to teaching in a traditional studio setting I want to feel calm and grounded about the choice so I can be of service to my students.

I want to say that I know it’s an incredible privilege to be able to choose if I return yet. Many people have been working this entire time and I can’t imagine the emotional gymnastics required.

I am going to continue creating offerings for those of us who are either not ready, or not able to return for whatever reason.

I want everyone to know it was not an easy decision to make. As I see all the teachers posting and returning to their classes I’m certainly feeling some feelings. I’m sending you so many virtual hugs until I can wrap my arms around you in person.
