Trying out Athletic Therapy for the first time?
Here is everything you need to know before you book an Athletic Therapy session:
📝Your First Appointment
This first session with an AT is known as your initial assessment. If you are a new client or this is a new injury the AT will spend this session gathering information to guide the following sessions.
🧩Assessment Components:
Generally speaking your initial appointment will include:
⁃ History: the AT will ask you general health history questions, questions specific to your injury and your treatment goals.
⁃ Observations: the AT will take a look at the injury site (if possible & if you are comfortable) as well as general movement patterns
⁃ Special Test: the AT will perform movements with you to test specific structures that they may think are involved
⁃ Palpation: AT’s rely heavily on the sense of touch. In order to help gather information about the injured area the AT will touch (otherwise known as palpate) the area feeling the different tissues and any abnormalities that may be present.
💪🏼Treatment/Rehabilitation:
Once an initial assessment is completed the AT will provide you with information about the suspected condition or injury and their plan for treatment going forwards.
Treatment sessions often include some or all of the following:
⁃ Manual techniques: treatment done by the AT using their hands (massage, mobilizations)
⁃ Modalities: ultrasound, cold, heat, electrical stimulation
⁃ Exercises
⁃ Home program: things you can do at practice, home, work, etc.
If you ever have questions about your injury or what your AT has planned don’t be afraid for an explanation! That’s what we’re here for!
As always, if you have any questions feel free to message me or comment below! ☺️

What is Athletic Therapy?
🦴🏃🏻‍♂️💪🏼👩🏼‍🦽🏋🏽‍♀️⚽️🤸🏿‍♀️🏒🤽🏻‍♂️🩰🦾🚵🏾‍♂️⛑🫀
Over my last 4 years as an Athletic Therapy student and now as a graduate and certification candidate, this is a question I have been asked A LOT!
Often my answer to this is “kind of like physio but we do field work too”. That being said, we have our own name and credentials for a reason, and we are so much more than being known as “kind of like something else” even if the professions are very similar!
ATs are musculoskeletal specialists with extensive knowledge of injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation of MSK injuries, concussion care, exercise physiology as well as emergency care (All ATs are certified first responders).
ATs provide care within clinics as well as on field care for just about every sport out there, whether it be on a field, in a rink, gymnasium or pool. You can even find ATs working with the armed forces, in hospitals or within industrial workplaces.
ATs work with everyone! Unlike what you may think based on the name AT is not just for competitive athletes but anyone looking to return to work, play or regular activities of daily living.

NEW BLOG POST ALERT: Whether you are an athlete or not, injuries are stressful to deal with. When an injury occurs at work, impeding your ability to earn a living, that stress rises exponentially.

Welcome to my professional Athletic Therapy account! I’ve been on Instagram for a little bit (you can follow at mgt.athletictherapy) but I’ve joined facebook as well so I figured it’s time for a little re-introduction.
My name is Mackenzie and I recently graduated from the Sheridan Athletic Therapy program in Ontario. Currently I am studying for my National Ceritification Exam and then I will be entering the field.
Previously I have worked with athletes at the highschool, university and professional level. As well as individuals within the Sheridan student clinic. Recently I moved back to NB and I am excited to start working with and returning individuals to work and play! (Location TBA)
My goal through this account is to not only allow you to follow along my professional journey and connect with me but to also shed light on Athletic Therapy and what it can do for you!
If you have any questions about Athletic Therapy or if it’s right for you feel free to reach out via messenger, email, or comment below! I’d be happy to help ☺️
Thanks for following along! Big things coming!
