Look who is heading to Nationals this week: Coach Ella Lord! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
We are so grateful to have you on our team!
Ella Lord is a dual sport athlete and is preparing for national-level competition in both sports.
As she prepares to make her CanPL Nationals debut, Ella also this week found out she has made Team Atlantic in tackle football and will participate in a national tournament in that sport in August.
Although she only started powerlifting in 2024, Ella’s background in competitive football has made her no stranger to the weight room.
“I’ve been lifting for a long time to train for football, and because I really enjoy it. I’ve always been a team sport person but my coworker Emma (Hicks) introduced me to powerlifting and I loved the sport and the competitive environment that adds another layer to my training.”
Ella is 22 years old and lives in Rothesay. She’s a recent kinesiology graduate and works as a strength and conditioning coach and a clinical exercise physiologist.
On the gridiron, Ella has played for both the Saint John Storm women’s team and also the UNB Red Bombers in the men’s Atlantic Football League.
While she’s made Team Atlantic in football, she hopes to someday also play for Team Canada. Similarly, Ella hopes to one day make also make a national team for powerlifting.
“It feels like it moved really fast but it’s been exciting and I’m really grateful to be able to compete at this level.”
Ella’s best competition lifts are a 137.5 KG squat, 85 KG bench press and 177.5 KG deadlift.
Although she’s always preferred team sports, powerlifting is starting to change Ella’s mind.
“ I think powerlifting is great because each person is held accountable and can take a much more individualized approach to training. I also love how supportive the powerlifting community is. It’s very competitive, but when you get to meet day it’s just about trusting your training and doing what you can do, which I think is a great opportunity for supporting other lifters.”
Ella will compete in the 69 KG junior class at CanPL Nationals on Saturday, March 14.
