Common signs of an overactive pelvic floor

✨pain with s*x, inserting a tampon or cup
✨constipation and or hemorrhoid's
✨urgency or frequency with urination
✨incomplete bladder emptying
✨back, hip , SIJ pain or tailbone pain
✨straining to empty your bowel or bladder
✨pelvic pain or burning
✨stress urinary incontinence

These are just some of the symptoms.
The muscles of the pelvic floor can be overactive, meaning they are tense even at rest. This can be voluntary or involuntary.
When the pelvic floor is overactive it can’t relax or lengthen fully. This is why doing more ‘kegels’ won’t help improve your symptoms, and can actually make them worse.

The way to know if the muscles of the pelvic floor are overactive, is to be assessed by a pelvic health PT and most importantly find out WHY! From there, an individualized treatment plan can be made

Did you know strength and core training is one of the best things you can do to promote a healthy back?

The spine (particularly the lower back) is responsible for supporting the weight and movement of your upper body. The core muscles in your abdomen and on either side of your spine can actually help to relieve weight and pressure from your vertebrae and spinal discs, decreasing your risk of developing chronic back pain later in life.

Did you know Physiotherapists can assess your posture and how your body moves to help people create better patterns?

Here are a few benefits of good posture 👇

🧍‍♀️ Improved breathing: proper spinal alignment paired with strengthening your deep supportive abdominal muscles increases chest expansion and flexibility to take in more air and allow it to flow without restrictions

🧍‍♂️ Reduced tension: eases pressure within the vertebrae, which causes less discomfort and lowers risk of various musculoskeletal disorders

🧍‍♀️ Enhanced circulation: Reduced spinal stress from poor posture decreases vascular constraints within the spine for unrestricted blood flow to the extremities

Birth prep!

It’s one of my favourite things to do to help empower and prepare people for their labour and delivery. Knowing your body is capable of amazing things and learning to listen to it during delivery is very beneficial.

When working with clients we discuss lots of things including:
- How they are feeling and their goals
- How to prepare your body for labour through stretching, pelvic floor relaxation, perineal stretching
- Positions to help optimize contact between baby’s head and cervix
- Ways to find relaxation during contractions
- Ways to set up your environment to make it relaxing
- Positions to move into if you have a feeling baby is stuck
- Pain management strategies
- Positions to birth in
- How to push
- How to advocate for yourself
- What to do in the first 6 weeks postpartum

The best part about labour prep is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home if you prefer not to come into the clinic!!!

If you have questions you can send me a message!!

Unsure or having a hard time feeling a close and lift when performing a pelvic floor contraction? Give these variations a try and see which one works best for you!

1. Sit on something that will put pressure on your perineum. This can be a pillow, rolled up towel, ball, or pool noodle. Inhale and expand over the surface, exhale and lift away from the surface.

2. Elevate your hips! This gravity eliminated position will take some pressure off your muscles. Often those with prolapse have a hard time releasing their muscles as their pelvic floor feels the need to work 100% of the time to hold up their organs.

3. Childs pose. Another position where you may feel more of a release in your pelvic floor to help you feel a stronger contraction

4. Lean forwards! This may help you engage more of the anterior pelvic floor muscles, thus feeling more of a close and a lift near your p***c bone vs just the back

5. Lean against a wall, pressing your sacrum into the wall. This can take tension off overactive pelvic floor muscles, allowing them to relax more and move through full range of motion
