Movember highlights the importance of and helps to break the silence around men’s mental health. Checking in with friends is one important way to improve our mental health and challenge the stigma. If more support is needed, psychologists can provide vital tools for well-being.

Let’s change the culture and make mental health a priority.

Happy Weekend Folks!

We have some exciting news! Hobson Psychology has relocated to Suite 200-202 (second floor), but is still at 89 Canterbury Street. We are coming together under one roof with Ricky McIntyre, RSW. Working in one setting, we hope to be able to meet more of your family's needs in one place as we gradually expand our businesses. Although he does not have any immediate openings, Ricky offers services for children and youth, which are beyond my scope of practice. We look forward to continuing to serve the mental health needs of our community.

Hobson Psychology is closed today to recognize and remember the indigenous children who suffered abuse and lost their lives in residential schools. Today is an opportunity to recognize not only the individual trauma that these children and youth experienced, but also the impact it had and continues to have on their families and future generations. Today is an opportunity to recognize harm that was done, strive towards healing, and learn to be better individually and as a society going forward.

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Steve Colwell on completing the requirements for his Masters in Counseling Psychology. He spent the last nine months completing an external practicum at River Stone in Fredericton, with me as his supervisor. He is excited to continue working at River Stone as he continues to grow his therapeutic skills while completing his LCT residency. Centered in humanistic therapy approaches, Steve is able to weave in ecclectic approaches based on his clients' needs. Steve brings his clients a great deal of listening, empathy, compassion and lived experience. I have no doubt he will continue to excel in his chosen career path and I wish him all the best on his future endeavours.

“If a person can’t get out of bed, something is making them exhausted. If a student isn’t writing papers, there’s some aspect of the assignment that they can’t do without help. If an employee misses deadlines constantly, something is making organization and deadline-meeting difficult. Even if a person is actively choosing to self-sabotage, there’s a reason for it — some fear they’re working through, some need not being met, a lack of self-esteem being expressed.

People do not choose to fail or disappoint.

No one wants to feel incapable, apathetic, or ineffective. If you look at a person’s action (or inaction) and see only laziness, you are missing key details.

There is always an explanation.
There are always barriers.

Just because you can’t see them, or don’t view them as legitimate, doesn’t mean they’re not there. Look harder.

Maybe you weren’t always able to look at human behavior this way.
That’s okay.
Now you are.
Give it a try.”
