We know muscle building is great for all sorts of health conditions, but did you know that it helps prevent dementia?

A 2022 study found that lower muscle strength was correlated with a greater risk of dementia. It was found that in adults over 65, low muscle mass was associated with decline in executive cognitive functioning. The thought as to why this is is because the muscle secrete molecules that help with brain functioning. When exercising, there is also a greater blood flow to the brain which can impact memory and cognitive functioning.

This is why resistance training is so important, this goes for all ages!

Brain Food Friday: This week's session is a bit different, we will be going over the best way to bring up menopausal symptoms with your doctor! This was a video done through the NAMS website and you can watch the full video here:
https://www.menopause.org/for-women/video-series-2024A 2024 analyses

1. Do your homework! Having an understanding of your symptoms and the available treatments for them is a great place to start and will help you feel confident during your visit.
2. Ask the questions that make you feel uncomfortable. Low s*x drive? Bring it up. Vaginal dryness? Let us know! The more information you can give us, the better off your treatment plan will be.
3. Don't assume your symptoms are normal. Just because you have multiple family members or friends dealing with the same things, does not mean you need to suffer.
4. Symptoms may not seem menopause related. This is a very common one that I see in my practice. Joint pain for example, is often related to menopause!
5. Follow-up: this one if more for a visit with your GP as during my visits, we typically have an hour and can go over all your symptoms. It is important that you voice all your symptoms so that you get the most effective plan.

If you feel ready to take on your menopausal journey by the reigns, book a visit today!

Brain Food Friday: Depression & HRT

Depression can hit women at any age, however there is an increased risk around the time of menopause.

a 2024 study examined depression rates amongst 170 Canadian women and found that depression rates were as high as 62%! This sheds light on hormonal changes around this age and mood disorders. Hormones have an impact on neurotransmitters, which has a direct impact on regulation of mood.

It was found that hormonal replacement therapy alone or in conjunction with antidepressants made a significant impact on depressive symptoms. Women who went through natural menopause had much greater results when compared with women who went through surgically-induced menopause.

Brain Food Friday: Menopause & Muscle Pain

The Study of Women's Health Health Across the Nation published in 2024 showed that women going through menopause experience significant muscle pain and are at greater risk of muscle related disorders. Between the ages of 40-55, it was found that 54% of women had muscle pain.

In women who had premature menopause (whether surgically or naturally) the prevalence of muscle pain was even greater.

In this study, they looked at 650 women and found that premature surgical menopause (meaning ovaries have been removed) had an increased risk of musculoskeletal discomfort and sarcopenia compared with women going through natural menopause after 45.

This sheds light on the importance of hormonal intervention for those undergoing premature surgical menopause.
