May is Caregiver Awareness Month across Canada.

To the parents, siblings, partners, grandparents, chosen family and the support workers who show up day after day for someone with an intellectual disability, your care holds people and families together. You plan ahead. You advocate. You show up on the hardest days and the ordinary ones.

Caregiving in our community is often lifelong and often invisible. We see you and we are grateful.

“Sometimes you have a lot of fatigue, but you have to move and never give up.” — Mohamed Hassan Mohamed.

Mohamed’s Story: Finding help in a cloud of pain

Life for Mohamed Hassan Mohamed is about perseverance. Without it, the pain he lives with from a disease of the spine would be greater than he is able to manage.

“The pain doesn’t go away, but I have to survive,” says Mohamed, who has ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease of the spine.

“Sometimes the pain makes me cry. It's like being in hell.”

Mohamed was put in touch with Ability New Brunswick by his counsellor at the YMCA to get help furthering his education and to find ways of cutting his financial burden.

Since then, Ability has helped him get courses he has taken reviewed by the Chartered Professional Accountant Atlantic School of Business for possible credit towards an online program he wants to take. An application was also made to the province’s direct-to-tenant housing benefit to help reduce his rental costs.

In addition to chronic pain, the disease causes spinal stiffness and can affect other joints including the hips.

To help manage the pain, Mohamed regularly exercises at the gym.

“You have to be active all the time,” says Mohamed, who moved to Saint John from Malaysia in 2019. “Sometimes you have a lot of fatigue, but you have to move and never give up.”

Mohamed says Ability NB has eased the pressures in his life.

“They are really good people,” he says. “They helped me a lot. My counsellor is really amazing.”

After getting help from Ability NB, Mohamed is now looking at ways of giving back by participating in its peer mentorship program.

Peer mentor volunteers have personal experiences with a mobility disability and provide one-on-one or family support to others in similar circumstances. Peer mentors listen, share experiences and provide tips. They meet individually with others or give advice in group
settings.

Mohamed has a lot to share when it comes to coping with chronic pain and is looking forward to learning from the experience of others as well.

“I am really excited about that program, being able to participate in it with other people.”
